Game saves - the issues
One more thing to consider before deciding what route to take...
Game Saves - specifically locked ones.
Many of the options above result in you getting a new (to you) PS3.
Before sending your dead one off (be it for repair or replacement), you should take a full backup of everything you wish to keep.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to do this with locked game saves ![]()
The ONLY way to get locked game saves from one PS3 to another is with the 'data transfer' utility from firmware 3.15
And to do that, you need to be in possession of BOTH PS3s at the same time...

I hope that this thread may be of use to at least one person ![]()
As far as possible I have tried to ensure that all the above is factual, but please feel free to point out any mistakes or omissions ![]()
And please note that I can't be held responsible if you try any of the options and it all goes horribly wrong! ![]()
Good luck, and fingers crossed you get back to hours of gaming soon! ![]()

With thanks as ever to dwad69 and pEETb in this thread -> http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation
confirmation of the few files which the 3.15 data transfer option does not copy across can be found at

For help in identifying which lens your PS3 has got, here are some pics ![]()
Or more to the point, links to pics, as uploading them as actual pictures makes the post go weird on this forum software ![]()
KES400AAA lens (which is almost certainly what is in your 60Gb PS3)

KES410AAA double lens

KES450AAA (slim PS3s, just for ref)

9) Swap keyed IC on logic board from BMD-001 to BMD-003
Try getting the dual laser setup working on the 60GB PS3 using a complete 80GB bluray drive and logic board BMD-003 by swapping the key IC chip only, from the 60GB BMD-001 version. As the two logic boards are different and made to drive single or dual lasers and swapping the key IC means the motherboard and logic boards will still be married.
KEM-400AAA uses BMD-001
KEM-410ACA uses BMD-003
This is just a theory and I haven’t done it but I think this mite just work?

Given that dual laser units seem to fail just as often as single laser units, I'm not sure that this would bring much benefit, and carries a LOT of risk... ![]()
If you were able to isolate the IC key chip, and IF you were able to remove it, and put it on to the other drive board, without damaging it, it would be an interesting thing to try ![]()
However, if it doesn't work, you then need to successfully get it back onto the original board.
If any of those steps damage the IC, you are left with a PS3 motherboard that has no matching drive board - ie is un-fixable ![]()
NOT for the faint hearted I would suggest! ![]()

So if Sony are telling the truth and they make no profit from giving you a NEW one.
So does this mean PS3's are only worth £130 and retailers charge a lot so BIG profit?
without trying to make this into a discussion thread, as it was really only intended as an FAQ one... ![]()
But 'no'.
For starters, if you are outside of warranty, and send it to Sony, (£130ish), they don't give you a NEW one.
They actually either repair yours, or give you a refurbished one - ie a broken one that someone else has sent in, and Sony have fixed.
After parts and labour, and delivery costs, it is quite believable that Sony make no profit out of the £130.
But that has nothing whatsoever to do with retailers and any profit they may or may not make selling a PS3.
