Fat ps3 HDD into New PS3 slim?

My Fat ps3 died last night so i bought a new Slim ps3 today. I was wondering is there any way of getting the data from my Old ps3 to my new one. I didn't back up my data because i wasn't expecting it to die :smileysad: And can't turn the old ps3 on because its Dead :smileysad:

Re: Fat ps3 HDD into New PS3 slim?

short answer - no :smileysad: :smileysad:

longer answer - maybe... :smileyhappy:
By 'dead', I'm guessing YLOD? (breif flash of yellow light, then solid red?) :smileysad:

many people who have experienced this have managed to get it back to life long enough to backup at least some games by using a hairdryer (really!)
do a google search for PS3 YLOD hairdryer :smileyhappy:

depending on what you are going to do with the old one, you probably want to try to deactivate it from the XMB Account Setting option too :smileyhappy:

* YLOD? * *PSN Connection Problems?* *Blu Ray Problems

And we weren't even testing for that..

My ps3 will live out the rest of its life as a door stop :smileyhappy:

Re: Fat ps3 HDD into New PS3 slim?

If you do get your PS3 working again there is a way of transferring the data to the slim. It was in the latest firmware update.

Never done this myself but look up the 'data transfer utility' in the online manual. Doesn't appear all that straight forward if I'm brutally honest, but I sure if you can follow all the instructions its possible.

Good luck on getting the PS3 sorted!

Re: Fat ps3 HDD into New PS3 slim?

just for note...
the data transfer utility apparently works really well, MOVING over pretty much everything from 1 PS3 to another :smileyhappy:

HOWEVER, the key word is 'MOVE'.
and the bit that the instructions don't mention is that it can take some time (hours, typically)

as such, I don't know that I would personally recommend using it to MOVE that data from a PS3 which could re-YLOD at any moment - I'm not sure what state the data would be left in if the donor PS3 died mid-transfer :smileysad:

Some people have managed to get a YLOD PS3 to come back to life for hours by using the hairdryer - others have got just a few minutes :smileysad:

PERSONALLY, I'd do the USB backup method first, as at least you are COPYING data, not MOVING it - so if the PS3 dies mid copy, at least you will have some data on the USB.

Bigger step, depending on the amount of data you are desperate to keep, is to rip the dead PS3 to bits and do a full blown DIY 'reflow' and add new thermal paste.
This is a bigger job, but is likely to extend the life of the 'dead' PS3 for MUCH longer (some people have reported being fine for months after doing this).

All depends on how much effort / cost you wish to go to in order to get your data :smileyhappy:

Some notes to be aware of:
backup to USB will not allow you to backup copy-protected saves.
data transfer WILL move copy protected saves across - but is a bit more complex (not difficult, just lots of easy steps) :smileyhappy:
