Re: Installing Linux?

Hi Short-cut,

For more information on how to install Linux on PS3, please download the installation guide from Terra Soft. Click here to download the guide.

This guide explains how to perform the installation and offers internet links to the required software.

However, please be aware that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) can only offer support up to the point where your PS3 Hard Disk Drive has been partitioned and you are ready to load the Linux operating system. Support after this point can be obtained from Terra Soft or the Linux community.

Thanks

Re: Installing Linux?

But you have to re-format your hard drive and lose everything on it to do it, yes ? Would have been nice if we were given the option to partition the hard drive on first start-up. :-s

Re: Installing Linux for PS3?

Does it permanently change your PS3? Or can you still access the XMB after installation?

You can set the PS3 to either boot up Linux or the XMB.

If you sign in with the PSN account you bought it with, you should be able to dl it again for free.

Re: Installing Linux for PS3?

I hate Linux myself. I agree that you should have the option of partitioning the HDD in the initial setup, although if you're using it as a PC replacement - some people have - then i recommend a HDD upgrade. I use a 7200rpm 350GB one and demos + media load much quicker.

Some places sell PS3 with various Linux distros pre-installed. Yellow Dog is the standard as it was designed for Macs (in the good ol' PPC days), with the PS3 using a PPC processor that would have been similar to today's Macs if they didn't use Intel...

Thought I'd say that, answers some questions, gives advice and offers pub chat. What more could you want

Re: Installing Linux for PS3?

from what i can recall, yes you need a HD tv to install, linux on the PS3, at least with yellowdog you do.

however the output is not widescreen, so i have put using it as a media center until ydl have release some update. well at least not on my TV.

feel free to PM me with any particular questions you might have. i dont frequent here too often though.
