Is my PS3 f****d?

Original 40gb with 250gb installed.

This is a refurbished model.

Recently the console has been freezing or stalling before starting up. I click on my user to log in and its almost 1 out of 3 that the console will simply stall and refuse to load up the XMB icons. (sometimes it loads up some icons, while others are missing) Needless to say, I am stuck on this screen and the only option is to switch it off on the back stitch.

So rather than switching it off constantly, and adding further damage, I read that getting the System Restore options was the way to go. So I clicked on Restore File System and eventually I get to a screen saying

'Your Hard Disk is corrupted and will be restored'

So I think, great, now i'm gonna lose all my data. So I click OK and the progress bar begins to fill. It took roughly 30 minutes to hit 50 percent and then suddenly shot up to 100. The console rebooted, and I get back to the SAME screen saying

'Your Hard Disk is corrupted and will be restored'

So I go through it again, this time its much faster. It hits 100 percent and reboots. Back to the same screen.

There is no way to cancel this restore option. (unless I turn the console off and see what happens next)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And no, it's not under warranty anymore.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Is my PS3 f****d?

sometimes taking the hard disc out and putting it back in helps.

either that or try to force it into safe mode again, and choose option 4 this time - has potential to loose some (minor) data

or this link

is a pretty ultimate big hammer - but involves opening the PS3 up and fiddling with the internal battery, so is not for the faint hearted, and has the POTENTIAL to do more damage...

Re: Is my PS3 f****d?

thanks for the reply. I can get back into the Safe Mode, but I must stress, I need to get my save files, that's if they have not been deleted already.

Is there anyway to do this? I don't have a 2.5 SATA enclosure, I just have USB flash drives, but I cannot get back on the XMB!

I should have just left it alone, but I thought sorting it out would have been better in the long run. Looks like I was wrong.

Getting the save data is a number one priority right now. I would go round to my friends and put this HDD into his PS3 if I knew it would work. But i've never replaced a drive before, as easy as it might be.

Re: Is my PS3 f****d?

Just tried to select option 4: Rebuild Database.

A message comes up saying HDD cannot be accessed.

Is there anything I can do to salvage my game saves? Hundreds of hours on Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Re: Is my PS3 f****d?

unfortunately, putting your HDD into a different PS3 will force it to be wiped :smileysad:

the SATA enclosure wouldn't work, as the PC would be unable to read the PS3 format :smileysad:

your only real hope now is to take the HDD out of your PS3 and then put it back in - HOPEFULLY there is a dodgy connection going on, and re-seating the drive MIGHT clear this...

Re: Is my PS3 f****d?

In the end I had to reformat.

Lost all my data.

For the people reading this, let this be a warning to us all. Back up your data from time to time, epecially the BIG games like Oblivion, Dragon Age and Fallout 3.

Do yourself a favour and don't let it happen to you. This is twice in the past 6 months i've had to deal with this on Oblivion. I won't be playing the game again for long time.
