Just updated my ps3 & blu ray drive died

[ Edited ]

I just got back from holiday today & just put my ps3 on to play lbp was playing that fine for about 20mins when I decided to go online. I did the mediatory update & straight after my blu ray driver stopped working completely. No cd's, dvd's or blu rays work.

It was working perfectly before that I rarely used it & had the ps3 since launch.

Is there a fix for this can I backdate or something?

Re: Just updated my ps3 & blu ray drive died

it is pretty unusual for the entire blu-ray drive* to fail (inc DVDs etc), but it does happen unfortunately :smileysad:

There are several things you can do, depending on if you're in warranty or not.
If you click the 'blu ray problems' link in my sig below, I have listed some options :smileyhappy:
first thing to try though is the safe mode boot, option 3 (details inc in that linked thread)

* usually when they fail, it only takes out blu-rays and games discs

* YLOD? * *PSN Connection Problems?* *Blu Ray Problems

And we weren't even testing for that..

So basically I'm expected to pay for a fix?

Re: Just updated my ps3 & blu ray drive died

unless the safe boot sorts it, or you are still in warranty, or go down the SOGA route, yep :smileysad:

Re: Just updated my ps3 & blu ray drive died

Warranty ended ages ago but I shouldn't think that matters as I said the update killed it I hardly use it, probably only had a weeks worth of gaming out of it since I brought it.

Re: Just updated my ps3 & blu ray drive died

unfortunately, Sony take a different view* about whether or not the expired warranty matters :smileysad:
Partly, I suspect, because there is no way to prove how much use any given console has had :smileysad:

You can always give them a go though :smileyhappy:

* very, very occasionally we get a report of a (slightly) out of warranty PS3 being replaced for free - but these are few and far between :smileysad:

Re: Just updated my ps3 & blu ray drive died

Just been reading more post with same issue looks like calling them is pointless I will write them a letter, those guys/girls at the customer help lines are pretty powerless & is like talking to wikipedia (full of bad info).

Re: Just updated my ps3 & blu ray drive died

it does seem like this update has killed quite a few lasers, i've just got a PS3 off Ebay to repair, its on firmware 3.21, i.e. the latest one, i've emailed the seller to ask when they updated the PS3, before or after the laser failed, then i can do some testing when the new laser arrives

the ones i've repaired with new lasers have all been updated without issues
