Just recently my fan has been quite noisy, I remember when I first got my PS3 it was quiet as a mouse but now it's quite loud.

Does it need cleaning or is it a sign that it may be about to break ?

I've had it for just over a year and it's been played fairly heavily.

My 2 yr old 40gb ps3 was doing that for the last few weeks, was worse on MW2 then i got a couple of freezes and then at the weekend i got YLOD.

So now i have bricked 40gb PS3 with the choice pay Sony for a refurb, buy a slim, 3rd party fix or i suppose give the 360 a go.

Not saying yours will but that was what happened to mine, PS3 was well ventilated and wasn't actually used that much in the last couple of months compared to the first year etc.

Don't really want to give Sony anymore money and they can forget the PS4 launch models i wouldn't touch another launch or early console from either Sony or Microsoft.

Have you got your heating on? if the PS3 was quiet before then the warm air may be making the fans work harder. Also, gbarkie, if you have your receipt take it back and if not, buy a Slim because the refurbs I had all broke on me. I have a Slim now, it's much quieter than the old 60GB ones (although you can still hear it) and nothing has gone wrong so far, touch wood.

Yes if i do anything i probably go for a slim or maybe go to the enemy and get a 360.

What about this company Console doctor offering YLD fixes for £70 plus 6 months warranty on them that sounds tempting.

At least i got my disk out by using the fan test/clean  function that the 40gb can do.

mine also increased befor my ylod i had just been playing some new games so i ingored it i would suggest

1.using a low powered vac cleaner (like it says in the Manuel) to clean out the dust

2.leave it off for a few days

3.this might fix it but u should consider trading it into game as u will get over £100s and u could by a slim with another £100 or so and sony asked for £130 to repair mine

Is there any need to take it apart to clean it ? What about using a can of compressed air ? I heard that works.

no c air breaks them and taking it apart voids the warranty so sony wont repair it , game etc wont accept it and ebay prices are lower

I've had it more than a year so manufacturer warranty is expired ?

Trading it in sounds like a good idea, I'd have to check what prices I could get though.

I tried the vacuum method and it cleared the vents of dust but it's still making more noise than it should be. The same amount of noise as it did before I cleaned it actually.
