Not reading Bluray games and freezing in DVDs (PS3 60gb)

[ Edited ]

I've got a 60gb that suddenly stopped reading bluray discs. I've tried installing TWO working bluray lenses and neither of them make a difference. This is strange because usually when a bluray lens dies, it can still read DVD movies perfectly, but when I put a DVD in and it starts, it freezes in a black screen. I have to hold the power button for 10 seconds to force it to switch off (usually holding it for 3 seconds will switch it off normally), so it's actually frozen in the DVD movie playing mode.

This leads me to believe it might be a software problem. Any ideas on how to fix this? I've never seen anything like this before and I've fixed heaps of PS3s.

btw it's on fw 3.73. I don't want to update the firmware because there's potentially a hardware problem, which means it'll stay in the updating loop forever which means it's a brick. Updating to 4.11 is my last resort.

I strongly recommend always being on the latest possible firmware as it means you'll have the latest support tools available.

Try entering safe mode and working your way through the options available from top to bottom. Coincidentally firmware update is the last option on the list. The safe mode tutorial is here.

If safe mode can't help you then I'm afraid the only option available to you is to buy a new one. Sony is unlikely to touch it with a barge pole as you've opened it up. A store may be able to fix it for you though for around £40

Fixed it! I went into safe mode and used option 3, Restore File System. It told me the HDD was corrupted, took 30 seconds to fix, then bluray games and DVDs started working again perfectly!
