Hi all, my ps3 keeps crashing, even on the menu screen it just stops, cant turn it off by power button, i have to switch it off at the wall. It seems to be getting hot at the back really quickly aswell. I've done the fan test and its working fine but it doesnt seem to be kicking in when it should be. Any help would be great!!

Unless you upgraded the hard disk yourself and were on a 40, 60 or 80GB, you shouldn't be able to do that on your PS3.

If that's happening frequently, I'd try moving the PS3 to a different, more ventilated area, and if that doesn't help, I'd try the safe mode menu and rebuild the database, restore file system and reapply system update, to be sure it's not a software bug.

Try moving the console first though, you may think it's well ventilated where it is, though it may not actually be. (Under the TV in a stand isn't well ventilated)

I held the eject button while plugging the power lead in and it worked, the ps3 is still as it was when i bought it. I have tried to move it around but it still crashes. I have just noticed that its getting hot quicker than usual though. Maybe i should just send it off to be serviced?

If it's crashing even when cool, I think you should maybe get it repaired. If it's under warranty Sony can replace it for free if you call them up. Otherwise they'll replace it for £130 approx.

 Most shops won't take it as they'll claim it isn't broken as they're usually only equipped to cope with YLOD and similar hardware failures.

Most shops only offer a 30 day returns window on electronic goods, or even less in some cases. The shop is worth a try if it's brand new, though they'll often point you back to Sony.
