PS3 controller stopped working mid game

I was playkng batman absolutly fine, everything was working then out of the blue the buttons seemed stopped working one by one. First i noticed the L2 button stop then the x,circle,square and triangle buttons all stopped then the R1,R2 L1 stopped then finally the D-pad stopped but the ps button still worked as did the analogue sticks. But they have just stopped now too and i had to plug in a different controller to turn off the ps3.

 

Before anyone asks, i didnt recently drop it or spill anything on it. I was sitting playing the game for about an hour when it happened and it was plugged in charging will i was playing so i know its not the battery. i have tried restarting the ps3, plugging in the usb cable and trying to start it up that way but it wont even start cause the ps button dont work.

 

I dont see how it can just stop working mid game, i only brought it at the end of october and its only lasted this long where as my original one lasted 2 years and only stoppen working cause the case broke. I have also opened it up to see if anything obvious is wrong but it looks completly different to my last controller but it looks fine . 

 

it is a Dualshock 3 sixaxis controller. any help is appriciated
