Hi all,
I am having a problem with my ps3. The problem is the ps3 is not reading Bluray discs.
This is now my second ps3 60gb replaced under warranty by sony. The previous ps3 had a broken bluray lense so it was replaced for this reason.
The problem I have now is similar but different. The ps3 freezes up in the middle of a game then has to be rebooted by holding down the power button. Once the ps3 has rebooted the games will not be recognized, the only way to fix the problem is to do a full system restore, which takes 3 hours. The ps3 will go for about 5-24 hours before it crashes and has to be restored. I have now had to do this 3 times.
I have done a full disc format aswell to try and remove YDL to make sure this was not causing any problems, but this seems to remain on the system, even when selecting use all disc space for PS3 OS
I read that YDL when removed does leave the boot loader on your hard drive and it can't be removed.
Straight awayI thought the Bluray was broken but after speaking to sony customer service they thought it was a data corruption problem.
Does anyone know what is causing this problem and how can I fix it?
All help appreciated.

The full system restore had just finished which fixed the missing disc icon on the XMB. I then tried the restore file system which produced a message "The hard disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored" I selected ok and let the restore finish. When the ps3 restarted the disc icon had disappeared from the XMB. I repeated the restore file system process which again produced the message "The hard disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored" but still no luck. I am beginning to think there is something on my hard drive that will just not go away. Could it be that old YDL installation?
Where is the file system data stored, is it partitioned on the hard drive?
How can I do a full format of my hard drive and leave 100% nothing on there, or is this a bad idea?
Thanks for the help so far TTDegs

I have tried safe mode option 5 and all this seems to do is reset the ps3 system and not format the hard drive. But still this does not solve the problem. The only thing that does temporarily work is the full format. I will try formating the hard drive on a pc then see how that goes.
Thanks for the help.

I have not got a hard drive enclosure so I decided to format the hard drive in another ps3. This only seemed to do a quick format that was completed in 1 minute or so. What I did notice when my hard drive was in the other ps3 is that all the accounts on the other ps3 were still there, so all the OS for the ps3 system is not stored on the hard drive but somewhere else. ![]()
Because I am really getting fed up with my ps3 not working I decided to take some extra measures to try and fix it. I opened up the ps3 and cleaned the Bluray lens as per a video guide on youtube. My ps3 now appears to be working OK as I was running MAG all last night with no problems. As I have tried the format in another ps3 and cleaned the lens I am not sure what may have fixed the problem, only time will tell if the problem has gone.
I will post up in a week or so, or before then if it all goes pear shaped, and let you know the out come.
If anyone else is having similar issues with your ps3 I hope this thread has helped you out.
Many thanks TTdegs for your continued support.
