I just fixed my problem!
(Notice I didn't say *the* problem -- you could have the same symptoms, but a different 'cure'!)
What were my symptoms?
1. When I loaded a game disk, it would not appear under the games menu.
2. I could play DVDs -- but not Blu-Ray disks.
3. When I tried to restore from the safe menu or the regular menu, it would say my HDD was corrupted and that it would attempt to restore. Even after restore it didn't work. The 'corruption' was still there.
4. All downloaded games, videos and demos functioned properly.
I found this video on YouTube -->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly7sd5wFVA0 that suggested the following...
1. Run a game or demo that you downloaded from the PlayStationStore.
2. While the game/demo is running, insert your GAME DISK into the PS3
3. Immediately after the game disk is in the PS3, hit the Playstation button on your controller.
4. Your game disk should now appear in the menu.
That fixed my problem, it might not fix yours. But after days of screwing around with things it could be one of the following problems too. I have listed fixes that have worked for people.
1. Your HDD is corrupted and you have to format your HDD and restore from the safe menu. The instructions are here --> http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm
2. Your HDD requires replacement. If under warranty ship it to Sony. If not, replace your HDD which is pretty cheap. Instructions on doing that are here --> http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-G
3. Your blu-ray lens is dirty. Vacuum the vents of your PS3 following these instructions --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp2Vbd6mAJc That is usually enough to remove the offending particle of dust. Do NOT do a 'fan check' to remove dust, it will most likely only suck more dust into your PS3. If that doesn't work, and you are not under warranty, then take your PS3 apart and clean following these instructions --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSYYmYXgVl0
4. Your blu-ray lens needs replacement. A glaring indication of this is that CDs/DVDs/BRDs (blu-ray disks) will not play. (I was able to play DVDs so I figured it couldn't be the lens) A helpful tutorial on fixing it is here --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hn6dchLesY
Well, I hope this helps you...
