this is what has happened to me.
I have a slimline PS3 and did background download of Duke Nukem Forever demo one or two days ago, and set the system to shutdown after download.
The download just paused itself without option to resume and didn't do anything for like 8 hours, so i just shut the machine down. I know my internet connection was deffinately working and stable - i was on my laptop at the same time
It didnt shutdown properly and (i think) tried to continue to download the demo before shutting down, but as i said, the download has paused itself. My TV screen went black but didn't say "no signal from HDMI" as it always does after turning the system off and the green power light on the console started flashing on and off, but i had no control over anything. My pad wasnt responsive in any way, I couldn't turn the system fully off (even by holding the power button for a lifetiome) or functionally on, so i disconnected the power cable.
Now when it turns on, it gets to the login screen but when i choose my PSN profile it just goes to the XMB screen with the floaty/sparkly translucent ribbon background, but doesnt display the XMB and again i cant do anything, including shut it down. There is just the circular loading icon in the top right of the screen.
After a while i get a system message saying something along the lines of your system is inactive and so will shutdown, however it does the same again - doesnt shut down properly and becomes unresponsive at which point i have to unplug the power cable again.
Anybody know anything of this?
i have known demo's do a similar thing and pause themselves but i ususally just cancel the download, however i didnt notice this time as i had already selected to shut down the system after completion.
i'm not sure if my machine is under warranty or not , although i doubt it. i think it is 3 years old and also i won it at a Tesco staff raffle lol.

Try this - http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm
Choose option 4 "Rebuild Database"

OK, thanks for the reply, sorry i havent posted, been inundated with work.
So, I went to the page you gave me and followed the instructions on there.
i selected the options in the order recommended on the page, and did them all in turn.
Restoring default settings and the file system had no effect, but after rebuilding the database as you suggested, when the system started up it loaded the XMB, however there was nothing selectable on the XMB other than the settings. no other options at all appeared, so i shut the system down by holding down the power button.
i turned the system on again normally (not in safe mode) and it went through the second step again, alerting me that the HD file system was corrupted and needed to be restored (again). so i accepted and restored the file system. once this operation completed, the system reverted to not loading up the XMB at all again.
I then restored the PS3 system, which cured the problem (hooray!)
just updated to system version 3.70, restarted and PS3 is working normally again!
Thank you!
