PlayTV? guide or no guide

just one quick Q

does playTV guide in NZ actually work? i only get 2 hour guide

friend just bought unit as well and same thing!!!

I had some probs with my first PS3 and swapped with same result

I cant find playTV on freeview website but Sony claims it is freeview registered...therefore sure I should get guides, I even had a 13 day upgrade voucher with the purchase!

On phone to tech support I got the impression that the broadcasters control the guide content, but my old set top baox gets full 8 day guide

anybody know what I should expect?

cheers

Re: PlayTV? guide or no guide

I have exactly the same problem. The guide only shows 2 hours worth of content! So no, I'm pretty sure the guide isn't fully supported in NZ - which almost renders the product completely useless. I wonder if Fair Go have ever looked into this sham?

Hey PaulRenee & Iron-clad-Knight,

The EPG is Network dependent.  Whilst we have up to 13 days of EPG, the data ranges from Now & next* for Prime and TV3 Networks, to 9 and 10 day EPGs for TVNZ and Maori TV respectively.

Due to our commitment to the product we will continue to work with all NZ networks for growing the use of Play TV in the market and the enjoyment and convenience for PS3 users in New Zealand.

We cannot comment on behalf of the Networks or speculate on their rationale for the current data EPG provided.

Re: PlayTV? guide or no guide

When I brought the PS3 with playtv I thought it was the ultimate media solution claiming to do everything...which it does just poorly

The EPG is rediculous.. if I just use the broadcasted signal I get 2 hours for all channels, (my set top box got 8 days!)

If I install with the network EPG then yes I do get extended content but not for tv3 and Prime!!.. what the!!

Sony need to sort their act out as they are missing a mark with the product and if they claim it is freeview approved why dont I get the same content as the set top box?

Further to this now I am getting recording errors.  the playTv disconnects frequently and breaks recordings into 4-5 slices!!!

Please sort this out

Re: PlayTV? guide or no guide

The network EPG thing isn't Sony's fault. Mediaworks (TV3 et. al.) and Sky TV (Prime) refuse to provide their programme listings to the tvtv service. Sony can't do anything about this.

As for the broadcast EPG only being 2-3 shows ahead, that's because Freeview NZ decided not to use the digital TV broadcast standards used in other parts of the world, opting to use a simpler EPG with separate "channels" for "approved" receivers that carry the full EPG.

Lastly, to the recording errors: That depends entirely on your reception. The tuners in the PlayTV box, since they are USB powered (limited to 5 volts), are a little more picky about signal strength. If you're not in an area with a strong signal, consider getting a signal booster. Keep in mind that a signal booster will also boost any possible sources of interference, so it isn't a perfect solution.
