After using Play TV for several years it started locking up the other week. I would try to access the guide and it would lock but when I tried to quite the program it would crash and restart the PS3. This started happening each time I used PlayTV over the past week until last ight it locked and had to turn the power off at the mains switch. On restarting, a message said a file was corrupted, did a check and let me back into the PS3. However tried starting PlayTV again and locked on PlayTV logo screen and same thing of having to turn power off. So do I just delete and re-install PlayTV? However I presume I will lose my recordings so questions: 1. Is re-intall only answer or is there something else? 2. If it is only re-install can I use the main PS3 'backup' to save my recordings to external hard drive - will this work? Will it save everything or can I get it to save just PlayTV? 3. Is there any other way of saving the recordings but I can't access the PlayTV program? Any help is welcome!

Hi.  I have the same problem as your first problem - when I go into PlayTV it usually (but not always) locks up on the menus. I found that pressing X to quickly go into the live tv means it doens't lock, and I can then go back out to the menus again.

One thing I noticed is the hard disk is thrashing away when it locks.  The PS3 is still responsive to the PS button but quitting PlayTV makes it restart and not just go back to the XMB

It looks like it's possible to "back up" your programmes but only if you can get into your library in PlayTV.  There's an option "copy to menu" which puts them under the "video" entry as separate files.  It warns about no longer being able to manage them in PlayTV which I guess means they're no longer linked.

Not sure if it's related but I noticed the problem started after a firmware update a couple of months ago (can't remember the exact version)

I've found a few posts that suggest deleting the game data will fix the problem, but I'm not at the stage yet where I'm willing to lose all my recordings (far too many unwatched!) so I haven't tried it.  

My gut feeling is that there's a corrupt recording which causes PlayTV to hang when it does some kind of startup indexing.

Mine started the same as yours and after several crashes it now seems to have corrupted the Play TV software so I can't get to the library so can't copy to menu (wondered how you did that). It looks like my only choice is to delete and re-install which means losing lots of unwatched programmes I feel the last update may have made it unstable as been using Play TV without problems for years.

I am suffering the same problem.  Is there a remedy?  As i have had to uninstall the current update, and have had to resort to the original patch.

I think the best bet would be to delete and re-install.

Not sure if this would delete recordings and other content as i don't use it but i think that it likely would

Thanks everyone - still be searching for a possible answer but does seem I will lose all my recording and its needs a reinstall.

Found this thread from earlier in 2011. It seems quite a few people have had this issue following the last update to PlayTV. Shame Sony has not fixed the problem!

I gave the Play Station helpdesk a call to double check I would lose everything and they confirmed it. Having removed all the parts of Play TV and losing all my recordings I re-installed the disc and went back to the disc  version. Thinking the updates may have caused the problem I have not yet re-installed the updates. However it has since locked up again and crashing out to the main menu screen suggesting there is a problem somewhere with the PS3 and PlayTV. Very annoying and will try the helpdesk again but don't expect much.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
