How are you attempting to connect your PS3 to the internet? Wired/Wireless via a router?
Something? I think you must be referring to the firmware update, to download this directly on your PS3 you will need to go to Settings > System Update and press the X button.

My internet setup is such:
NTL Digital box for tv -> aerial to router -> router has ethernet cable which goes to a Ethernet USB adapter -> Adapter to PC via USB.
I have tried plugging ethernet straight in to NTLbox from ps3.
Straight in to router from PS3 via ethernet cable.
With USB in both PS3 and NTLbox.
Nothing.
It says in the manual you have to download something in order to play some PS2 games. It might be firmware. But if I can download it via PC and put it on my PS3 by USB stick or CD, it would be so much easier!!!
So as you can see I can't do a system update

The PS3 to my knowledge will not currently accept network connections via the USB.

You are using a straight through ethernet cable right? - You are really missing out if you don't have your PS3 online, what happens when you test the wired connection on the PS3? - check your manual if you are unsure.
