With the upcoming Playstation Move I am excited about shelling out cash and enjoying the fun, athletic  gaming. However, the playstation eye will not work with passive extension cables or powered usb hubs. 

I have a HD projector and need the camera the other side of the room and not 1.8metres of standard cable away from the PS3.  When I plug it into a passive extension cable the power lilght flickers on and off within a second,  the cable works fine and powers my 2.5" caddy drive over the 6metre run.  The camera works fine when plugged in without extensions so therefore all parts of the equation work ok.

Has anyone managed to extend the cable and what do you think the chance of a wireless PS3 Eye being released are?

I've personally not tried it...

but generically passive USB cables don't tend to transmit the required power very far.
And I would imagine that the eye requires a fair bit of power.

MIGHT be worth trying with a powered hub connected to the PS3, with eye plugged in to that.
then if that works, try your extension USB plugged in between powered hub and eye.

I personally use a 10m USB cable for my PC printer, which works fine, but obviously is only providing data, not data and power.

I guess a wireless eye is possible, but I've certainly not heard of one in the works

Sony customer support have finally told me that they can not help re extending the cable length (with no reason) and that there is no ideas for a wireless Eye at present.

Which leads me to this Belkin Wireless 4 Port USB Hub / F5U302ea - A wirelss USB hub. Makes me wonder whether the PS3 would work with the tranceiver dongle due to possible driver requirements as the product is aimed at the PC market. Any ideas from anyone on whether this would work?

I would (unfortunately) have to guess at not

although it would only be a guess!

But my thinking is that up until fairly recently (firmware 3.10 or 3.15?), several non-PS3 specific dongle equipped peripherals worked quite happily. Generic rockband etc guitars, 3rd party wireless controller pads.

But a lot of these seemed to stop working all of a sudden, with whatever firmware it was.

I guess the only way to be sure would be to try it - but my gut feel says no



Re Sony saying no but not giving a reason - I suppose that the couldn't test all powered USB hubs, and as they don't make such a thing themselves, couldn't be seen to be promoting anyone else's product? But again, only speculation on my part

I have the same issue and to get around this, I have decided to move my PS3 to the wall I project on and use the 1.8m ps eye cable as normal without an extension.

This puts the PS3 on one side of the room of course and the projector on the opposite side. To get around this problem, I am buying an RGB extension cable (you can find them on ebay etc) to extend the cable from my PS3 video output to the projector.

I also have to mov my sound system too but at least this solution should work!
