Problem backing up data onto external hard drive

I am trying to back up my hard drive data onto an external hard drive in order to upgrade my PS3  hard drive.

I am using  a correctly formatted external hard drive and my PS3 recognises that the device is attached.

When i attempt to back up my data, the screen displays a message saying " Backing up... do not remove the storage media" and displays a bar that shows how long the process should take.

I the get an error message saying "The back up operation could not be completed", and an error code - 8001002E.

Can anyone help?

Re: Problem backing up data onto external hard drive

strange one :smileysad:

the only other google result for that code (to do with backing up anyway) was someone else having exactly the same problem over 3 years ago :smileysad:

what size drive is it, and what s/w did you use to FAT32 format it?

And we weren't even testing for that..

250gb external drive. his machine,

Swiss knife.

It's a friend of mines hard drive. He used it to upgrade his PS3 when he put a new drive in then deleted his data off of it, so i know the hard drive works.

Re: Problem backing up data onto external hard drive

sometimes the backups fail due to a corrupt game save - but it tends to give a different error message for that :smileysad:

it MIGHT be worth deleting anything you don't want, or could re-download after the drive swap, and try again?

Re: Problem backing up data onto external hard drive

I've deleted all demos and videos that i had downloaded off of the PS store. The only things left are game saves and game data, and they all appear to be working fine.

Re: Problem backing up data onto external hard drive

I had this and no how to fix it!

Its cause by corrupt data so heres a TUT how to fix it

1.put ps3 on stand by

2.turn on but hold down the I/O button

3.when it turns of lift ur finger then hold it down again

4.u should hear 2-4 rearly fast beeps

5.lift ur finger,it should say 2 put ur cotroller in wired

6.chose option 3 this mend corrupt data (and  u wont lose any thing for doing it)
