Hi guys, having a bit of a nightmare with swapping from my original 60GB hard drive to a 250GB. Hopefully someone knows what I need to do to sort it out.
I was previously having problems with backing the stuff up from my 60GB to the external I have for transferring to the new hard drive. Eventually it worked, so I turned off the console, and put in the 250GB. I knew that this wouldn't work straight away, and I was expecting an error message to come on the screen and tell me that I needed to format the hard drive. Instead, the wave on the screen continued to do it's thing, and nothing else came up on the screen. I tried to turn off the console but got the triple beep noise, so I held the power button down until it did the emergency shut down thing. When I started the console up again, I held the button down, past the first beep, then the second beep, and removed my finger when I heard the double beep. At this menu, I'm given the choice to;
1. Restart System
2. Restore Default Settings
3. Restore File System
4. Rebuild Database
5. Restore PS3 System
6. System Update
Whn I go for number 3, the screen goes back to the wave. A message appears - 'The hard disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored.' When X is pressed, it comes up with
Restoring...
Please do not turn off the system.
[Progress bar]
After this process is completed, the system will restart.
This used to get to 17 or 18%, but recently after leaving it alone for other an hour, it hit 24%. (I'm hoping that I don't need this process to reach 100%, or I will have to have my console continuously running for days, with no guarantee of progress so far)
If I turn the console off using the hold for 8 seconds method, and turn it back on, I return to this screen.
If I hold down the button until the double beep, and choose option 5 (Restore PS3 System), the screen comes up with this.
If you format, all data will be deleted.
This data cannot be restored.
Are you sure you want to continue?
Yes/No
On selection of yes, the screen goes to a message on the black screen-
Restoring default settings.
Please do not turn of the system
Then the console proceeds to do what looks like the first time installation. Connect controller via USB, set date, time and time zone, etc. After this I am returned to the XMB, and can scroll around as usual. However - if I try to turn of the console, I get the triple beep, the green light flashes and nothing else seems to happen. If I try to install a game (Battlefield 3) it will get to 98% before stopping. In the system information, it is noted that there is 205GB of free space, and the console is on version 4.10 .
When I try to restore the data that I backed up from the original 60GB hard drive, I plug in my external, choose the back up file, and the system formats the 250GB that is in the console. After this, the console restarts and begins to restore the back up data.
Now, the first time that I did this, the console said something like, 'the back up data couild not be found' or 'the back up operation could not be completed' with an error code, very quickly after it started. I have just started the process again to get the error code again, but it seems like it may be working this time. It has reached 10% now.
When the console failed to do anything and I turned it off via emergency shut down, I would get the same 'the hard drive is corrupted and needs to be restored' message.
As I have typed an absolute ton of stuff about this, I'm going to post it anyway. Especially as it might not reach the finish. I will update this when I get a result. Apologies for any spelling errors in this, my spell check seems to be taking the day off.
Cheers
Liam

You need to do a quick format..
Try that.. and never use the rebuild database option again...
Everytime i have ever tried using that since i put in a new HD 2 years ago it loops...
Sony needs to fix that.
You also might need to have the firmware on a flash drive.

What a load of rubbish i regularly use rebuild the database and restore the file system its probably the reason i have never had a major problem in over 4 years with the same system and using a wired connection helps.
My theory on failed firmware updates is doing a system update on a wireless connection to much risk of packet loss and corrupted data if wireless signal is not consistent enough.

Ok, I sent in my PS3 for a repair under warranty from an aftermarket company. I mentioned that the hard drive didn't work as well as the main problem it was sent in for. The console now works fine. I don't know if it's still the same hard drive or if they swapped it out with another one, but all that matters to me is that it has plenty of space and it works. So yeah, everything is fine over here now. Thanks for your suggestions everybody
