I have played many hours of Skyrim on my friend's PS3. I have enjoyed it so much that today I forked out the money and bought my own ps3. Obviously I don't want to re-play all those hours of gameplay, so I have copied over the save file. I am greeted with the above error message, and cannot save the game.
I don't care about trophies or any of that. I JUST want to play my game from where I left off. There must be a way of doing this, I have searched loads and cannot find a way to do so.
Can anyone help me?

Did your friend create a new user on his PS3 to enable you to play? Or did he allow you to play under his user name?
If the former, then you will need to go back to your friends PS3 and sign into the Playstation Network with your ID (or create one if necessary). Ensure your Skyrim save is still on his PS3 beforehand. Once signed in, do a trophy sync. This will sync all your data (including the game save) to your ID.
You may then add the game save to your own PS3, and sign into the network: select 'Use Existing Account' and log in with your details. Then do the trophy sync and you should be able to continue your progress.

Thank you for such a clear response. Sadly it was the latter - not the former. I played my game under his username, as he doesn't play skyrim. I imagine that complicates things?

Well, you could sign in with his ID on your PS3, assuming that he was ok with that. You'd probably need to create a new user on your PS3 to do this, add the save, then sign in/sync up. You will not be able to transfer the game save to your own user name at all.
The problem is, this is kind of against Sony's terms and conditions as it could technically be classed as 'game-sharing'. Some people have been banned by Sony for game sharing so you would have a bit of risk involved, but so long as you don't download any other content from your friends account, you should probably be ok.
I know you said you're not bothered about trophies and suchlike but as a reminder they will be locked to your friends account as well.

After several attempts to complete the step by step process you have described above, I still end up with the same message once I've loaded the game save. I tried wiping the update but that didn't work either, in fact both the previous message and a new message stating I need to install the latest update.
Essentially, the sync up procedure was ineffective and I'm wondering if maybe I'm performing one of the steps incorrectly, or the problems remains unresolved. Thanks in advance for your help!

Im having the same problem. We have a Ps3 at home that I have been playing Skyrim on. Recently, I got a job that takes me out of town for extende periods so I forked out the money for a new PS3 to take with me, but I cant use my saved games. This is bullcrap! Not everyone is a cheater or game sharer. They got my money and treat me like a criminal. If I would have known this, I wouldnt have given Sony one red cent of my hard earned money. Matter of fact, I'm never going to buy another Sony product again because of this!
You could of avoided the problem by having your own account on the system you were using PS3's are designed for multiple users and accounts to cater for families etc.
We have four users on our PS3 each with our own profiles and our own save data tied to our own accounts.
