I have just got a new playstation 3 and during the setup I couldnt remember the password to my PSN account and the reset went to my work email address which I couldnt access for several weeks!  I therefore created a new user ID an dhave obtained trophies on that already.  I was wondering whether there was a way to transfer the trophies from my old user name to my new one or vice versa?

There is no way to link PSN ID's I'm afraid. All accounts are completely separate.
You could have contacted customer support and had the email address changed to gain access to the account earlier.
Bit late now, but there's nothing you can do to transfer it
