I have a launch day 60GB PS3 - CECHC03
It was repaired once by Sony due to an error with the BluRay lens, but that was approximately two years ago and it's been working fine since. Also I upgraded the HDD around the same time.
I recently got Uncharted 3 and played for an hour or so with no issues. Then in the middle of a game the screen went black, the console beeped 3 times, turned off and the power light started blinking red. I was horrified because I've read people having this problem before and it usually meant the console was finished. After a few minutes I pressed the power button at the front - the console beeped once and the light went from blinking to solid red. I pressed it again and it powered up fine, everything as normal.
I played the game for another hour or two and nothing else happened.
But then today after another hour it happened again, (this time the game was paused for a few minutes before it happened) and then after restarting it happened in less than a minute of starting the game - it's never happened with any other game, but I haven't tried playing anything else since I got Uncharted. There aren't any marks on the disc as far as I can see. I'll try another game later to see if it happens there too.
The console is out in the open and there's nothing to block the vents etc. Has anyone else had the same problem?

It sounds pretty bad - there may not be a yellow light but I'm pretty sure the triple beep and blinking red light are symptomatic of a dying PS3. Those 60GB launch models are becoming thinner and thinner in numbers and freezes are never good signs.
If YLOD is approaching, there's not a lot you can do - possibly deactivate the system if you don't mind losing online capability for a bit, if you're concerned about keeping saved data, try and back it up onto an external drive/usb drive while the PS3 is still running.
Short of temporary fixes/repairs, though, you might wanna consider upgrading to a newer, more reliable model.

a guy over on the scandinavian forums posted a very similar thread to yours. his too was a 60gb ps3, though he also encountered the game freezing all the time (apart from cut-scenes). coincidence? gut feeling feeling says no apart from that you're both running on old ps3s. might be time to upgrade or send it in (console doctors, perhaps?) for a repair.

Thanks for the replies. I played both a PSN and disc-based game earlier to see if either had issues but neither crashed, and the console was running for a few hours. Played Uncharted again for a while afterwards, didn't crash either. If it was happening on all the games I was playing it'd be understandable but for one game only, intermittently, seems a bit strange. I've never had a session freeze either, the console just turns off.
I'd invest in a new PS3 but I'm one of the very few people that actually use the backwards compatibility of the 60GB. Oh and I'm sentimental when it comes to launch day consoles!
As a matter of interest, does anyone know how long it should take Uncharted to load? Because from the title screen to gameplay it takes about 90 seconds which seems excessive.

I went onto the Naughty Dog forums and it seems that the issue is more widespread than I thought
Everyone else had the same story as me - an otherwise problem-free fat PS3 that shuts down randomly playing Uncharted.
The solution, for me anyway, was to sign out of the PSN before I started playing, and I haven't crashed since (That said, another person on the thread said that that didn't work for him). The PS3 shut down maybe 10 times between Chapter 1 and Chapter 8, then since I played offline I've finished the game 3 times with no crashes. Also, it seems to crash only in single player - multiplayer is unaffected. It's definitely a glitch with the game, which is a relief because I won't have to buy a new PS3, but also disappointing that a glitch like this could get through testing.
