what is sony's take on this in the uk? If i was to ring them up tomorrow and explain my position what would they say? and what do you, the ps3 community advise me to do now?

I'm really sorry to say but as you're using a 60GB console, your warranty has long since run out. The console will no longer be covered and you'll need to fork out for any of the options available to you. Here they are:
- Option 1 - Contact Sony Customer Support and arrange a replacement Console. The model may vary though you may be able to get a reconditioned 60GB depending on their stock levels. Reconditioned means repaired and brought up to retail standards, not just fixed. This is likely to cost a fair bit and needs arranged over the phone. You can find the relevant numbers here.
- Option 2 - Your next option, is to go to your nearest gaming shop and pay them to fix it. They will more than likely charge you £40 - £60 to do their variation of the "Hairdryer trick" which basically involves heating the PS3 to melt the solder inside. This usually "Fixes" it for a short while, at most 3 months, but at the worst it'll frazzle the console and render it a brick. In other words, avoid at all costs. You'd be safer and cheaper off hitting it with a mallet.
- Option 3 - Final option, is to simply up sticks and buy a new Slim PS3. This is the only viable competitor to option one and really it depends on how highly you value PS2 compatibility. A new PS3 will be more reliable, shiny and possibly cheaper than getting the old one repaired. Additionally you'll have a new warranty on a new console and improved reliability.
It's up to you which you choose to do, but options 1 and 3 are the only truely viable ones unless you fancy your chances and want to risk it. (I wouldn't. Ever.)
Re: Yellow Light Issue ORIGINAL 60GB system.
From what I've heard a reconditioned one is around 150 euros in some places. The best solution for you may be to invest in a new one and have the current one temporarily fixed as that'll give you time to get all your important stuff off it

If sony ask for an arm and a leg i suppose i'll get what i can for her and invest in a spankin new slim! thanks for the help i'd give thumbs up but i cant! cheers

Sort of what I was pointing towards without saying A new console is most certainly your best option. It's just what you're gonna do with the old one that remains to be decided. Bin or temp fix really.
