is it really worth changing the PS3 HDD

[ Edited ]

As the titlse says, isnt the 80GB in the ps3 enough and is the hdd that comes with the 80gb version good enough performance wise ? if not then ive got a plan, this hard drive is from western digital and is part of the new velociraptor range, ''2.5'', 300gb, 10,000rpm and 16mb cache, only thing im concerned about is heat, will it be safe to put in the PS3 ?

Heres the link to the HDD Velociraptor, 10,000RPM, 16MB Cache, ''2.5''

Personally, I wouldn't recommend that HDD. I'd only recommend upgrading your PS3 for the size, not the speed.

This is the HDD i have Western Digital 250GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATA150 5400rpm 8MB Cache as you can see, its a lot slower and I have no problems with it.

I really would stick with 5400RPM - what you lose in loading times you'll gain in piece of mind...  I've heard that overheating is a serious problem with the faster drives.

I have the 250gb WD Scorpio. No problems at all.

Hi Chaps.

Stick with what Buubar has stated to use i did except it's slightly bigger in size and the same specifications and without the problems.

Hey, have a read of my post a few posts up for a HDD that I'd suggest.

As for a guide, read this - How to Swap Out and Upgrade a PS3 Hard Drive

Re: is it really worth changing the PS3 HDD

Right guys i have a few questions on this.

I have a Launch 60Gb, and i am always finiding i am having to delete stuff that i don't want to delete, at the moment i have a a clean out and i only have 10Gb left.

With all these games coming out in the next few months no doubt, they will need space for Game Data.

So i want 320Gb, i have been looking around the net at comparisons between 7,200 rpm anf the stock 5,400 rpm. After thinking about it, being honest i don't care for loading times, i am happy with how my PS3 is now,  i just need masses of space.

Originally i was looking at this: Western Digital 320GB 2.5" Hard Drive Scorpio Black SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache

The sole reason being that i trust Western Digital Drives, for all of my PC's and everything else, because they have never let me down once.

But the safe bet is this: Toshiba 320GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache

Anyone have experience with Toshiba Drives? Does anyone have them in there own PS3? What is it like.

5400rpm makes sense as Heat is a big issue, even though tests say its a few celcius, adding more heat than what is Factory Default is pretty risky, i know first hand about Heat and consoles with my 360.

So what you think is that Toshiba a wise choice? Saving £20 too :)
