my 60gb has broken for a third time. first time blu ray discs not working. this time all discs dont seem to be spinning.
my ps3 broke only 4 months after a replacemant from sony. i phoned them last night and had the same response as everyone else, £130 odd quid with a 3 month guarentee for a refurb model.
i know of a well known localish store that fixes all consoles, and they only charge £80 with a 6 month guarentee and a 2 hr turnaroud. this is obviously the better deal. but i am not sure if i want it fixed. i mean i no longer trust a ps3 to last.
before i forget. according to sony, it was my fault for using a lens cleaner as this could have damaged the laser. i told them that i only tried a lens cleaner after it stopped playing discs.
anyhow, they said they could replace with a refurb model and give 3 month guarentee for £130. then i have to buy an extended warrenty that they dont offer.
i am in two minds to pull the ps3 apart and try to fix it myself.

if you have the right screwdrivers, it is not too difficult to do, if you've had other computer type things apart before, then that would be helpful
as i said in another thread, i can fit a new BD drive assembly in about 30 minutes

i think i will give it a go, just need to find out what screwdrivers i need. i often open up my pc to replace hadware s i am confident i could manage it. just did not want to remove the warrenty sticker but what the hell, there is no warrenty anyway and sony will never see it again, thats for sure.

taperproof 10 torx for the console sliding lid, under warranty sticker
jeweller type Philips screwdriver, for taking the BD drive console apart
and a size 0 Philips screwdriver for removing the top cover screws and the 4 screws holding the BD drive down
or alternatively if you just change the laser unit, you wont need the size 0 Philips, just the jewellers one

i have just opened up my ps3 and cleaned the lens. when i put it back together again i tried the first disc at hand, a ps2 game. loaded in great. i then tried a ps3 game, nothing, wont even play the ps2 game it just did. is it worth trying to clean lens again? or could something else be the problem?
cheers,
robert.

ok. just cleaned lens again. ps3 game still did not work. i tried a ps2 game, worked great. i tried another 3 ps2 games all worked. i played each game for about 5 min, then tried a ps3 one again, nothing. to make matters worse, when i tried the ps2 games again, they stopped working also.
soooooooo frustrated.
i have tried system restore, went into safe mode and messed about in there. i get a restoring corrupt files or something like that, but problem persists.
i don't know if its the lens or the br drive or the hdd is the problem.
i am not working so money is very tight, i dont want to buy a lens if its the hdd or the br drive, etc.
anyone know what seems to be faulty?
thanks,
robert.
