i know this is a common problem and there are various threads already open on the subject of the PS3 giving error " data is corrupted 8002f225" when installing a new HDD but so far I have not been able to find a thread that has provided a workable solution.
I have a fat ps3 with an 80gb hdd which is no longer working. I put in a new 500gb HDD and tried to update the FW using 3.70 on a pen drive but keep getting the "data is corrupted 8002f225" error.
I also have a slim PS3 - I can put the 500gb hdd in to that drive and the update works a treat.
I have downloaded various ps3 updates - 3.56,3.61,3.70 - i get the same error with all of them
Any ideas on how to get the fat ps3 working again?
Have you tried doing the install by using safe mode option 6 at all?
yes i tried that, infact i have tried all the options in safe mode lol
Sounds to me like 3.56 has struck again! That had the same problem, and they released a 'silent' update of 3.56 v2 that was a manual update that fixed the problem.
3.70 IMO has problems, so expect another update shortly.
The same issue has been discussed in the topic here with some suggestion as to how others have rectified this.
Let me know how you get on

thanks for the link but this fix is assuming that the user still has a working original HDD - which I do not
This is quite unusual given that the HDD is working in the other console. When you put either the 80GB HDD or the 500GB are they both displaying the error code when updating?
FYI i spoke to SONY and they were no help. They ran through pretty much all the suggestions on this forum and have no kindly offered to replace my faulty PS3 with a refur for £135.
I still feel my ps3 is salvagable so ill keep pluggin away. would be grateful if anyone has any further suggestions and likewise ill post an update if i ever get it working
