I spent a couple of hours trying to get up there last night and still couldn't find a way up the mountain.

the College of Winterhold?..well,you go through the city of Winterhold

It's kind of part of the city,even though the city is on rough times

Tee Hee, you've done what I did.  Head to the marker and try to go straight up.

You can't get to it that way.  Head back to the road until you can see Frostflow Lighthouse, then turn about 60 deg to your west and head diagonally up the mountainside, you can tell you're on the right path by the marker stones.

I can't find my way up the mountain to get to the city, though.

Its a simple thing of getting to a mountain you cant climb so you have to go around the base until you find a track leading up

That's the fun of this game, you see it as the crow dragon flies but you have to make your own way around the mountains. I just keep checking the (very poor) map and follow the base of the mountain until I find a track. Simples.

fast travel to Whiterun i think you should have that on your map,and take the horse and cart to Winterhold(the horse and cart is nearer to the farms surrounding Whiterun)...much easier,there are a few other towns you can go to by horse and cart as well which make exploring a little easier

also,a little tip on exploring,instead of going all the way to the southern eastern town called Markarth,go for a drink in Whiterun and take up Sam's offer of a drinking competition
