Personally I enjoyed the Dark Brotherhood storyline more than the Thieves Guild but both threads will allow you to pick up some nice armour and the Thieves Guild missions unlock 'fences' who will buy your stolen goods from you, which can be useful.
You'll probably end up playing through both anyway so it doesn't matter too much which one you do first. ![]()

Brotherhood is shorter and more enjoyable.
Thieves Guild is long and a grind at the end. Though you will need to grind it if you want the Plat for Skyrim. (Also, keep any Thieves Guild kit they give you)
On piece of advice, join and complete the Companions faction quests before completing the Stormcloaks/Imperial quest lines.
* No Spoilers*

major questlines I go (roughly,it can be hard to plan out progression)
companions :the rewards are good for lower levels,not so much later on
Civil war: this alters the default landscape and enviroment alot so getting it out of the way early reduces "issues" ![]()
finish main storyquest:
start and progress through thieves guild until the point you get the skelton key
at that point I actually find doing the misc quests for the theives guild in between dark brotherhood quests makes it seem less like a grind whilst still remaining stealthy focused

in my opinion thieves guild is the way to go, it makes selling stuff a breeze (the fences you unlock will eventually carry 4000 gold each by the time you fully complete the thieves guild), so earning money for house becomes very easy.
I will admit it is a bit of a grind, but what you get out of it is worth it (and some might say if it is a grind its worth getting it out of the way sooner rather than later.

Simply put, which ever tickles your fancy. Do you want to go out being a thief? Or do you want to murder people? Or why not join both? They all count towards the game completion and have their own specific trophies.
That is the beauty of Skyrim and Bethesda games, there is no set rules on how you play, YOU play the game how YOU want to play it and in which order. Do what you want to do its really that simple ![]()
