It wouldn't hurt concentrating on both types of armour it'll help your overall XP leveling i originally started with heavy armour then after a while the leveling slowed down so i switched to light.
Same with weapons i mixed it up between dual wielding for a while then single handed plus shield and single handed plus restoration and destruction magic.
If you mix it up a bit it'll boost your overall leveling giving you more points for boosting your prefered perk preferences.
One set-up i did use a while was single handed, light armour and conjuration spell muffle in the left-hand slot really boosted conjuration, sneaking, single handed and light armour really rapidly.

honestly you dont really need to upgrade your magicka to much only for a certain place that you need to do a spell to get into other than that if you prefer archery then keep to archery.... but also use single handed weapons as well if you want to level up quickly.....
im an archer in-game i use the deadric bow which is pretty good.... play the game in the way you prefer if you mostly wear light armour then focous on light armour.... but as others have said its not a bad idea to boost up your heavey armour as well just incase you prefer to try something new

That's the great thing about Skyrim there is no set rules on how you play the game you can master any skills you want to get the job done or mix it up abit like i did which in turn got me to level 50 quicker.
