It seems that playing Rachet & Clank has made him very good at 3rd person shooters. Have a look at this:

The question is, do I let him carry on playing this bearing in mind that this game is rated 15 and he is only 8. Would the online only still carry a 15 cert ? I wouldn't let him play the campaign as there is some swearing and he is not old enough for the story.

well, I watched the video and its quite shocking of how good he actually was, although there are a few arguments as to why done so good, its irrelevant because he's 8.
Whether or not to let him play it can only be your decision but personally I think you should let him play story, and just monitor his game play and skip the cut scenes/turn voice's off.
As for multi-player, I would say its worse than single player because you can get some very rude people swearing and saying some explicit things, or may just be talking to their friends in a more adult conversation which you can't ask them to stop because he shouldn't really be playing. However, you could monitor him and when each game starts, mute all the players.
The age rating is for the violence, and TBH... it seems he's already been exposed to it :/ lol.

Apart from the 3 vs 3 match, good for an 8 year old.

Yes, you are right.....I certainly didn't let him use a headset while playing Burnout for that reason as although the game is pretty harmless ( and he is old enough to play it) I didn't want him exposed to the language online.
He certainly wont be using a headset for playing Uncharted and I've also taught him how to mute everyone before a game.
