War & Shoot 'Em Ups: General

As a longtime SOCOM fan I pretty much gave up on console shooters when SOCOM4 came out and was total crap. I rented the last Call of Duty game but didn't get in to it as it seemed like the same game as last year with a slightly different twist.

I have mostly been playing MMO's on PC that devour all your spare time and your life, I am past that now and want to get back to playing on my PS3 again.

I had a look at Battlefield 3 and the latest COD again but they both have that much DLC now is it worth jumping in with the base game? I am not really wanting to invest an extra 60 quid in DLC I don't know if I will use yet. 

Is there anything coming up soon that is noteworthy or looks promising or are we in an attack of the clones era where everything is more of the same FPS game where you spent 90% of your time sprinting?

BF3....you dont have to bother with the premium element if its not for you and see low ranking people all the time on standard maps so people are obviously still new to this...because its more balanced as well and once you have got used to the handling and the maps it gets a lot easier and generally close games

Most shooters these days are going to be along the same lines but Medla of Honor Warfighter multiplayer looks pretty good from the short clips ive seen, i never played the first MoH multiplayer because i was playing Battlefield 3 at the time but im looking forward to seeing more of it before i make my mind up

Number 1 please, not fussed by single player, if it happens to have a single player that is decent I will play it but if not then no big loss!

I played the last MoH game when it came out, I enjoyed the single player but the multiplayer was horribly balanced.

Battlefield 3 sounds promising so I may give it a go if I can find it cheap enough.

Also im not limiting myself to FPS, I actually prefer third person but it seems like those are dying off a bit in recent years for military games anyway.

bf3 and mw3 are both pretty poor online,bf3 sound keeps dropping, i honestly wouldn't recommend either and i definitely wont be buying blops 2. i loved bfbc2 and put hours into that game but unfortunately the last time i played it the games were quite empty.bf3 was influenced a lot by moh gameplay which like you i hated.

For FPS I would go for BF 3 or Killzone 3 which for me is the best FPS on PS3 ( Yes I love Killzone and I am not going to apologise for it) COD is too arcade for my taste.

Now, for a good TPS online, beside Uncharted, I would go for Transformers War For Cybertron.

It could be the perfect thing for you for these reasons:

1)It's a great game made with heart and it's very solid (it's the second best license game after Batman Arkham Asylum/City).

The online is not very populated (300 players more or less) but I had no problems finding matches or playing at any hour of the day, also you have 5 XP forever there so if you are looking for a platinum it will come in 2-3 weeks max: no frustrating grinding.

2)The sequel, Fall of Cybertron, is coming August 24 which means that you can play War for Cyberton to whet you appetite/prepare for the sequle...which seems to be even better.

3) You can download the demo of Fall of Cybertron multipalyer on the PS store so you can check for yourself if the game/series has the quality you are looking for...you could really fall in love with them.

BF 3 will be supported till BF 4 so you can pick it even later, or wait for MOH Warfighter altogether which is set for end of October but consider Transformers.

Battlefield 3 is still and will be popular for some time to come yet. I'm a premium member and sill enjoy playing on the standard maps that the game shipped with, which are all still as popular and as easy to find as the day the game was released.

RDR is quite fun online and is still quite popular for its age if you haven't played it? Its still being supported by R* with various XP events as well.

Have Dice/EA restored their servers, because last I heard, all you could find were privately owned ones...?
