Hello Party People
So each year the Community Awards happen without fail (unless you count being delayed sometimes a failure) and yes, we normally vote for our favourite games from each genre.
I wanted to pre-empt this though by having a wee discussion on the world of first/third person shooters, Strategy and all round war related games of the year. During the actual awards discussion can sometimes take a back seat with people just giving their votes so I feel this should hopefully do as a good companion thread to go along with it when it all kicks off.
First of all I will admitt that the RTS genre has been a little quiet on PS3 this year. Many of the games in this genre have been hits on the PC, Dawn of War 2: Retribution, Supreme Commander and World in Conflict being examples. But a big shout out has to go to PS Store title Under Siege as well as Plants vs Zombies, which loosely falls under the RTS category (and was free to many with PS Plus). Not the busiest of genres so you'll understand that there have not been many discussions here in WASEU regarding them (plus they are more at home in the PS Store Games forum).
I'm gonna list as many of 2011s first and third person shooter titles as I can, with a little help from my Wednesday Event poll:
Brink
Battlefield 3
Goldeneye 007 Reloaded
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
Crysis 2
Bodycount
Homefront
Killzone 3
SOCOM Special Forces
Warhammer 40000: Space Marine
Duke Nukem Forever
Modern Combat
Resistance 3
Bulletstorm
Red Faction Armageddon
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Rage
FEAR 3
I may have missed a couple, particularly any downloadable titles but what I'm gonna ask you to do is to pick a hamdful of these (your top 5 if you will) and talk about your experience with it and why you think it's the best. Any awesome moments you encountered while playing single and multiplayer?
I'm gonna talk about mine in a moment but feel free to go ahead and talk about your top shooters of 2011.

It has to be said, it has a top soundtrack does it not?
Particularly the intro, when the game actually begins after Alcatraz has got the suit off of Prophet and you see all of it's abilities in action.
It's sinister, violin led, real creepy. It was also composed by Hans Zimmer, the same man responsible for this:
To be honest, I would have loved it if the Crysis 2 theme music could have been the music for Going for Gold. With all those pictures of the European contestants flying down, not waving but staring depressingly at the camera.
Henry Kelly could then come on dressed in the full Nano Suit and say "Maximum Quiz Show" then lift up parts of the set and chuck them around.
Would have been a great show.
With a lot of complaints.
Crysis 2 was one of my favourite capmaigns of the year and it's multiplayer was a great "alternative" fixture in my Wednesday Event. It even encouraged fksi to run an event on Sunday for a good portion of the year too which built up a steady community of regulars.
I particularly loved how you always (apart from early parts of the tutorial section) had access to the suits abilities, stealth, speed, power etc. This enabled you to assess how to combat certain parts of the level outlay. You could always think tactically.
Plus it was a good length.
So Cyrsis 2 is my first choice for shooter of the year.

Battlefield 3, Killzone 3 & Homefront for me

Bulletstorm
This is my second choice. For the record I did play shooters from the second half of the year, it's always good to start from the beginning (other than that these are in no particular order).
It's another EA title too and I'm sure a lot of people will have Battlefield 3 in their top 5s so they're becoming a pretty competent "stable" for first person shooters.
The above video is from my WASEU Cinema Club. I have to be extremely thankfull for the fact that you can turn off the gore and swearing in the option menu so I could record that footage and have it here on the forum ![]()
It's silly and daft in it's narrative as well as being incredibly over the top. Much in the same way as Duke Nukem and Serious Sam. But there's also this arcade style scoring system which other games normally save for extended play (Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War 3 have extra "arcade" modes which allow you to rack up points), Bulletstorm has that in there from the go and THEN it has it's score attack mode (Echoes) for those looking for an extra thrill.
It's a great game for showing off in.

Deus Ex Human Revolution
What a great game this was. An FPS that had everything from stealth to full out explosive action. I was really really surprised I liked this game. I liked it so much I completed it 3 times for trophy that ended up never unlocking. The story was good with good twists and turns with the only let down for the game being the boss fights.
Battlefield 3
I played BFBC2 a few times but I didn't get into it much as I joined the party late and was owned by every man and his dog. After I played BF3 I was left in awe. The site of a plane or chopper in the distance slowly plummeting to earth and then the distinctive boom as it explodes, the way you just take aim on an enemy to see a jet smash into the ground just inches from your feet is just awesome. This is probably the game I have put most hours in this year in so little time I even surprised myself. It has everything from great gun battles, tactics and team work. The best multiplayer experience of the year for me.
Modern Combat Domination
This was just a measly PSN title so I didn't really expect much. After playing I was pleasantly surprised it had a great multiplayer experience and good graphics and gameplay which was reminiscent to Call Of Duty but it was a bargain of a PSN game. It is a shame it didn't have any DLC released for new maps or anything otherwise it could have lasted a bit longer.
Duke Nukem
The game was in development for years but I somehow missed the hype train when it came past the station. I really liked this game with sense of humour and relaxed gameplay it made a break from the seriousness of most shooters and I loved every minute of it. The reviews didn't do it justice and this was probably due to the lengthy development/hype period.
Homefront
Again, under rated due to Call Of Duty ruining the FPS scene
This was a good game with a good single player and the multiplayer was a great experience aswell with the little perks and some great maps.
