Where'd my Avatar image go?

I uploaded some images to my gallery and now my avatar image has gone and I've lost it and it was my avatar and everything! I've temporarily picked another image, but I don't see why my image disappeared.

It was an extract from a long-out-of-copyright drawing of the Cheshire Cat by John Tenniel. And it's gone! (As you can guess, I'm slightly gutted).

I have 28 images in my gallery. I thought this thread said you could have 1000?
