I have started researching the Sale of Goods act and think that the retailer may have an obligation here.
Goods have to be fit for purpose and be of satisfactory quality. In previous cases judges have ruled that even though out of warranty, consumers can expect a certain level of quality with a product. Especially when a product is sold as a quality item and is expensive.
For example, is it reasonable to expect a £400 next gen/state of the art console to last longer than 2 years?
I am now thinking of going back to currys and quoting the act, trading standards etc.
A good site I have found is "Consumer Direct", very interesting..

I got lucky and just missed Sony's £145 charge. ![]()
But it is a disgrace to charge users of a fault which is clearly Sony's fault, not it's customers.

tbh what can sony do about it?
The consoles are already out there, and this only happens with a small minorty. Nothing is perfect.

Pull your head out mate ive had 4 fail in 18mths all with YLOD all 60GB models, i even had to argue to get a ps3 IN WARRENTY REPLACED
Sony need to figure out which batch have the high failure rate and offer some sort of deal ive even twice set up continuos play for my ps3 both times failed due to my model number something needs to be sorted a petition aint likely to get looked at take note from james open letter to the HOME boss's and write another they actually give him an answer we may get answer
but if you decide to do this and actualy take time to gahter info from user ect i'd be happy to help as I DO have a backbone!

where do i go to sign up for this petition , i have posted all over the Australian forums saying the same thing read below
If everybody got together on this issue and there was a list of people all with the same problem on a petition , Sony would have to address it , at the moment sony say this is an isolated issue when in actual fact it is very common especially on 60 gig launch consoles . the very least they should do is repair these models free of charge even if they are out of warranty .
Microsoft had the same issue with Launch model Xbox 360s but they had the common decency to extend warranties on all those models as well as repair free of charge which was the case for me anyway .
this is not an isolated issue its a scam , when so many people report the same problem it becomes an issue which sony must respond to and deal with not charge everybody another 315 dollars on top of the 1000 dollars it cost me for my launch model PS3 and 1000s spent on games and Blu Rays . at the moment my PS3 sits in the same spot broken next to my fully functional XBOX 360 , i much preferred my PS3 but i cannot justify spending more money on sonys stuff up.
Get together people you need numbers before sony recognise an issue . they are quite happy to take your money to fix their mistakes.
Sony if you see this , all i want is my PS3 fixed and this not to happen to others... play fair . westsurfmark@hotmail.com

i have a pre-owned 60 GB cost alot of money, absolutely no problems other than GH world tour sometimes freezes, worth the money
Erm ok. From my experience its kind of a bad move to go with refurbs. My 1st refurb broke due to lazer issues. Second due to YLOD. And the third refurb which came last Wednesday broke within 2 days due to a major graphics card fault.
I have paid £145 for a PS3 to break within 2 days. Sony manager rang me after my email. I now have a brand new PS3 on it's way. I suggest anyone with a 60GB to take out continuous play. I hpe at some stage Sony announce the 60GB has issues as it's getting more and more popular by the day.
