Setanta and PlayTV user?! Let me know if you agree with this.... please!

Allo,

I have sent a letter to Sony and Setanta (quite a while ago now) asking them to start talking to each other and allowing the setanta channel that is detected by PlayTV to be decrypted. I am already indentifiable to Sony through my PSN and Debit Card, and I am also indetifiable to Setanta through my Subscription and Debit Card.

So marrying the information from the two accounts together, I asked them arrange something to allow those of us with PlayTV and a Setanta Subscription to be able to watch, record, rewind and schedule for upcoming shows much like is possible with PVR's that have a card slot. the ability to do this is already technologically possible and in fact not that difficult to achieve, if it was then we wouldn't have encrypted channels available to us on any kind of TV platform.

Anyone else like this idea? Because in about 2 months I will be writing to them again (I don't expect a reply from either pf them) showing what support this idea has behind it... that is ofcourse if anyone else agree's with me.

I reckon you should get an online survey/petition together to back up your thoughts.

The question is, can this small USB piece of hardware do the decoding if needed? It might not even be possible with this current hardware, however if it is, then I'd be interested.

Its the C.A.M that does the reading and Decoding, Freeview boxes NEED a CARD slot for Topup TV and Setanta to work normaly.

I'm sure future updates will include TOPUP TV and Setanta support. If they didn't have use for them, they would of got rid of them in the last update.

It's unlikely to happen. Setting up a brand new system to identify whether a particular PlayTV user has subscribed to one of these services would be far to expensive to install and would only really benifit PlayTV users, and Sony already have their money.

Updates can't remove channels, like all freeview boxes it just displays all the channels it finds.

Yeah but acting as an agent for those without subscription, by taking your money, giving some to TopUp TV getting the code from them and then decoding your picture - is a business plan, so Sony might be interested, unless current PlayTV has no decoding chip.

Maybe a subscription is in order?

I am sure the Cell Broadband Engine has the raw power to apply a decryption key to an ecrytped Freeview signal, if it cannot do this but a chip that has less power than a Pentium 1 can then Sony/IBM/Toshiba may as well stop making Cell processors all together as they are clearly not suitable to the needs of the 1990's let alone to the needs of 2010+.

I'm not sure how exactly does it work, but don't forget PlayTV is a USB device and all it outputs is video data via USB. You won't have video data if you do not decode the scrambled signal in the first place, so you have no choice but to perform unscrambling before the USB i.e inside PlayTV box.
