Speed up forum use with section based bookmarks.

[ Edited ]
Time to learn why bookmarks are good and can speed up this forums use.

How to build a picture based bookmarks short cuts for this forum.
what you need :

IOS 4.1 on Idevices
General knowleage of IOS functions.

This forum has self contained sections, this means each core topic area can be viewed seperate from the main language page with the sub sections of that Area still in view.
This means for example if you dont care about PSP why load the main screen with the PSP section included, with bookmarks you don't.
Buy bookmarking only the areas your interested in you use up less bandwidth but you also skip adverts and don't have to load the news section after you make the bookmarks.

To do this For IDevices

Navigate in Safari to the topic area section your interested in you do this by hitting the main title instead of a topic post link..

Pinch zoom/move the screen till the contents of the screen would make a good image because thats what it will be, as it will be the icon image.

Press the extras/options icon.

Select add to Home screen. you should now see the bookmark icon preview. you can now edit the bookmark title.
The IDevice screen size alters how many letters you can use.

Now hit Add

This now places a New icon on Home screen.
Repeat for each area your interested in.

How to lay out the icons.
Well IOS 4.1+ has a folder option or it has the new screen option, ether is accessed buy you pressing your finger on a icon and hold it there and it opens the sorting options. Drag and drop items on top of each other to build the folder or drag them to the edge of the screen to drop them on to a  empty screen to make a new active screen.

One book mark I would put as an importance is the " view all " my posts link from your profile page. As it lists every post you made and if there are any new replies.
So you can go directly to that topic with a single Click.

Heres MBs http://www.community.eu.playstation.com/t5/forums/recentpostspage/user-id/246969/post-type/message   as an example. but lets Keep the stalking to a minimum now.

This will save a lot of bandwidth..buy avoiding what you dont want or need sections.

This is the exact same idea as "Spaces" on the US jive forum software. but instead you build it manualy out side the EU site on your IDevice.

single screen version.
Icons look better than just plain text in a folder.

Re: Speed up forum use with section based bookmarks.

Very nice post and guide!

One word of warning though, those who are running 4.3 and save bookmarks to homepage will experience 'slow' speeds compared to using safari normally on 4.3
Reason for this is because 4.3 speeds up Safari (Using Javascript Nitro) typically from 10ms (not exact number) to 4ms, however if you save to webpage it will still be 10ms.

Useful trick though.

I dont have access to Snow leopard or lion but if some one can adapt this for OSX 10.6/10.7 Please do.

Photo book marks on OSX 10.5 finder.
If you drag A URL from a browser URL bar on to the desk top you create a URL icon on the desktop
Now bring up the info box for a picture You want to use for the URL. Right click the picture then click info.
Quick look will have created A preview icon for it top left. Now click the preview icon once with left button and use the keyboard short cut for copy.
Now bring up the info box for that URL icon. Now click once on the icon for the URL. Now use keyboard to paste.
The image should now be replaced.
Text for the Icon is replaced the sane way as any normal file.

Ta for the feed back about IOS 4.3 being slower and the direct section links .

Its a shame the web team were to cowerdly to replace to expanded forum with just the calapsed forum design on the front page only instead of having browsers do double the work.

I would have been more than happy to help out with that but I never got around to getting snow leopard. And now with lion coming sometime June-September I want to get a new Macbook Pro with lion already installed. Sorry dude

Re: Speed up forum use with section based bookmarks.

Good Idea. :smileyhappy: Prompted me to sort out bookmarks. So nice not to have to wait for that atrocious header to load now, although I imagine this may cut down my viewing of other board sections.

If this is possible on Windows 7 or if a browser for W7 supports photo bookmarks. Please post how and what you know.
