I'm not saying this is where the problem lies but sometimes ending late in races is due to using pilot assist: this limits you a lot when racing elite classes. For example, see this video.

Besides the fact that that guy probably plays a bit too much, you can notice that some of those corners and the way he cuts them is just not possible using pilot assist; especially the one on Ubermall after the jump as pilot assist will steer you off the edges where you need to go over them rather than around.

It's annoying coming off pilot assist at first but you very soon get used to it.

It also matters about what ships you use: Pirahna, Auricom, Mirage or there are two others (I honestly can't think of their names) are possibly the best when playing against elite because the elite AI can't use them (you are already) to kick your butt so quickly as well as giving you good acceleration which is needed to catch up.

If this isn't the reason then don't mind me. I'm just posting some thoughts. Hopefully they will though.

It definitely isn't a problem with pilot assist.

I realised it was on by default when I got the trophy for winning a race with it on, and immediately turned it off.

Only went back to see if it helped during the race I was stuck on. It didn't, so I turned it off again.

I'm not a huge racing game fan, and my girlfriend is way better than me at them, and she's managed to get bronze on the race I'm still stuck being last survivor on. It's all good. Guess I just need to get (much) better to beat it.

But I can definitely say the game is cheating, and I don't like games doing that, so I probably won't bother to get better.

It may be cheating, but that won't stop you winning
You need to make use of your airbrakes, lean into corners, lean upwards when you're approaching a hill and try to do barrel rolls because they give you a boost.

It's a hard but fun game

I dont wanna be mean but are you playing on novice???? LOL that's nothing, try playing on Elite!! I'm going for the 'Elite Campaign" trophy and the AI is one tough SOB, but if you want advice i would say:

1) always use one of the fastest ships (I prefer Icarus) so you can catch up quickest

2) get rid of Pilot Assist, it slows you down in tight fast corners

3) if you have the Fury add on, DONT use the fury ships. I know the ship upgrades seem good, but the AI ships get them as well! Piranha, Icarus & Trakis are already the fastest in the game from HD, so the last thing you want is for the other AI ships to get more speed as well!

Anyway, what i'm REALLY dreading is the 'Zone Zeus" trophy. i think if i can get the Elite Campaign trophy then maybe i got half a chance at Zeus and the Platinum (I hope)

I have all the difficult trophies on HD, and I can say that the AI definitely don't cheat. What they do, do is play better, or worse depending on your position. The game is 'banded' but the AI don't exceed the capabilities of their ship. They don't get weapons or boost from no where (as someone else stated) this isn't true. Even on Elite I can put a good 10 seconds between me and the guy in 2nd place.

What they will do however is when you start getting ahead, they will run a PERFECT line. Fortunately if you're really good this isn't enough for them to be able to catch up or even keep up with you.

What makes the most difference in the game are barrel rolls. Are you using them? these put you ahead of the AI because the AI don't use them. Never. So consider every barrel roll you do a +0.5 seconds on the AI. The more of these you do the better you're end-result is going to be.
