Arrghhh this is getting frustrating now. I'm pretty much right at the start of the game. Last thing I did was stare at a wall long enough for a bunch of symbols to appear and then I think I got 'Marys Teachings'.

So far, I have a little green icon on my map which is a user created mission, a cross symbol which just goes underground and comes out another end, and a red star icon which is just that mary woman flying around.

What am I supposed to do next exactly? There should be another story mission icon on the map but there isn't - any ideas?

The UGC mission is a side mission made by sucker punch that relates to the story. Complete it in order to proceed.

When in doubt always press L3, that will bring up the current objective.  And no; you don't have to play UGC missions in order to get along the main story line of FoB, those missions only count for the trophy which you can score.

In this case you can also bring up the map, that will also reveal something about your next objective.
