The Project / Hobby Thread

Inspired by another thread I got thinking  and decided to start a thread dedicated to peoples projects, hobbies or any other pastimes they enjoy

Please include pics if possible :)

I'll start with my current project, my love of all things R/C, a hobby I have only just started again after a 20+ year absence.....

I'm building a R/C Tamiya Super Hotshot which is a 2012 re-release of the classic 1986 Tamiya Hotshot, the first shaft driven fulltime 4WD off road buggy. The Hotshot was the pinnacle of R/C cars at the time, and like millions of others around the world, I wanted one....but at around $900 at the time, out of reach for most. So I'm revisiting my childhood and having a mid life crisis :P

Wow, that’s an impressive R/C car.  My dad used to build kit R/C cars when I was younger.  He had two, a bigfoot and a boomerang.  They were both really fast; much faster than my kid hands could cope with; so took a few nasty crashes in the bigfoot; till my dad made a nice metal plate for the boomerang to bounce off. With a metal plate to bounce off, I had a blast; they are really fast R/C cars.

Sadly, I don’t really have a hobby to share, I do however have a picture of something that I felt was a huge achievement to what I guess you could call a hobby:

I really need to get a hobby.

Cool, you've got a good set up to continue working with there Rob :)

Btw, there's probably a Thomas the Tank Engine game on the Wii :P

@Nomembrane, I was thinking of the Boomerang, but the Hotshot came with a full metal ball bearing set, GT tuned motor, and a few other extras.....so it won hands down (plus it's a Hotshot) :)

Yeah I got A Train 6, it's released as a backport for PS3 (so you don't need a 60G PS3). I just can't get my head around it and the graphics are carp.

I've put the tyres and wheels together and put them on, being the re-release it has gold rims, I also put a few stickers on. I'll cut out the polycarbonate body and rear wing over the weekend, that's all I can do until the battery packs and spray paint arrive next week.

I need the batteries so I can test/calibrate the electricals, and make sure the steering servo is in "neutral" so I can attach the steering arms, and then screw the whole electrical box to the undercarriage.

The colour of the cars body (as per box art, and instructions) is silver, but after looking on the interweb at other peoples finished cars, I've gone with metallic red......it makes it look more like a rugged off road buggy, and looks awesome with the gold rims  I have to also wash the body before spray painting it since you spray the underside of the body (so the outside doesn't scratch), I don't want any dirt/dust on it (I'm surprised how well the driver came out due to my hopeless painting skills), then  comes the painstaking task of carefully putting the stickers on the body so they're straight and have no air bubbles :smileyfrustrated:

I also had to pull apart the shock absorbers cuz I made them to soft. After putting them on and moving the suspension arms up n down numerous times they loosened up and felt too soft, so I put on plungers with smaller holes (the kit comes with 3 different sizes) which of course add more resistence as they move up n down thru the oil filled shockies

Alrighty I'm all ready to tear up the dirt......

I've got all parts, all assembled, painted, and most of the stickers applied etc, just gotta wait until the sun comes up over the mountain to dry the ground out, then I'll take it for a spin

I was thinking of spraying the front bumper metallic red also, any thoughts on that anyone ??

I've got a set of these black mag wheels off ebay on the way also, which will make it look even better I reckon.........

Got a new toy today...an HSP 1/8 scale Buggy, bigger and much faster than the 1/10 Super Hotshot :)

2013-06-04 16.36.10.jpg

2013-06-04 16.37.10.jpg

HSP 1/8 twin LiPo Buggy                                                  Tamiya 1/10 Super Hotshot

              - 3300Kv fan cooled brushless motor                                      - GT tuned 25T brushed motor

(brushless motor = 50% more power)                             (about 50% of power lost thru brushes)

                        - 2x 11.1volt LiPo batteries                                               - 1x 7.2volt NiMH battery

                        - Top speed about 100km/h                                             - Top speed about 40km/h

         - 120Amp fan cooled Electronic speed control                           - 40Amp electronic speed control

                        - High torque 9kg steering servo                                    - Standard 4kg steering servo

My new car will give any nitro, gas or petrol powered buggy a run for its money. The combination of brushless DC electric motors, and Lithium Polymer batteries make electric buggies just as fast (and some say faster) than petrol powered buggies.....no longer are petrol cars faster

A larger scale and they couldn't even fit a driver in there :P

Do you think it coud pull over a statue of Baby Panay?

And after all the attention you gave the Tamiya, too.

Hahaha, its all good, the Tamiya, (although more of a refresher course in RC) and the thrill of building a legendary Hotshot, will still get my attention, especially as I search for "hop up" parts to turn it into a brushless/lipo, nitro eating combo :P

The new HSP will be getting "hop up" parts also down the track, mostly aluminum and carbon fibre components, and possibly a 5-6000kv motor

Looks like I'll be getting alloy hop up parts sooner rather than later :(

Why do trees have a tendency of jumping out in front of you at high speed ?? :P

Yeah I've noticed that. It must be so much cheaper with a model car though.

Alrighty, I've fitted the front/rear suspension, and the rear wing holder aluminum "hop up" parts, just waiting for a few more for the steering servo, centre gearbox and heatsink + cooling fan for the motor.............

Way cool Gav, way cool.

Going to be a heck of alot more solid when back outside.  Are there any tracks that you can take it too for racing?  How big is your yard?
