The Project / Hobby Thread

Inspired by another thread I got thinking  and decided to start a thread dedicated to peoples projects, hobbies or any other pastimes they enjoy

Please include pics if possible :)

I'll start with my current project, my love of all things R/C, a hobby I have only just started again after a 20+ year absence.....

I'm building a R/C Tamiya Super Hotshot which is a 2012 re-release of the classic 1986 Tamiya Hotshot, the first shaft driven fulltime 4WD off road buggy. The Hotshot was the pinnacle of R/C cars at the time, and like millions of others around the world, I wanted one....but at around $900 at the time, out of reach for most. So I'm revisiting my childhood and having a mid life crisis :P

Cheers mate,

An indoor track has opened up recently in town (Taree, NSW) it has both on and off road tracks, so I'll have to check it out one day. As for the size of my yard...6 acres of mown lawn, but grass is no fun as the tyres grip, and with the power and speed of the car it tends to just roll instead of sliding, so I'm going to check out the local showgrounds horse arena, shoild have smooth dirt for some high speed antics :)

Ahh, having a track to go to will be a blast, I have seen outside dirt RC racing tracks with jumps, awesome to watch couldn’t imagine it being very easy to drive.

That is a massive back yard you have there! Maybe some plastic tyres could be good for grass? :smileytongue:

Have you ever tried playing with flying RC toys? They seem to be pretty fragile in my experiences :Stupid:

Yeah I've mucked around with RC helicopters, but they are very hard to fly, and after a few crashes and expensive repair bills I gave up, much more fun with cars anyway I reckon

I could get some on road tyres, they should slide :)

Awesome track!  That looks like a lot of fun, although it looks pretty hard too :smileytongue:

Those cars are airborne so easily, are they the same sort of power of your HSP?

Yeah they are pretty much the same, except the gear ratio would be tuned for quick acceleration but lower top speed due to it being a track. Mine is setup about midway, with quick acceleration and higher top speed.

Due to my new found addiction of RC cars, I bought one of these Team Durango 1/8 scale off road buggies the other day......AUD$700 from the US. Now I need another $250-$300 for a top of the range motor and speed controller to go with a top of the range buggy

I wish the PS4 would be released sooner, the way I'm going I'll run out of money :smileytongue:

Well I couldn't help it, but I had to go one bigger and buy a 1/5 scale Rovan Baja 260s buggy

Weighing in at 15kg, 85cm long and a 2hp 26cc 2 stroke motor (bigger than my wippa snippa) this thing is a beast, and a blast to drive, with a top speed of around 80kmh. I can of course upgrade the carby and exhaust to bump it up to 3hp and a top speed of 100kmh.

To give you a bit more of an idea of the size, the wheels are 17cm in diameter and 10cm wide....huge compared to my 1/8 scale buggy.....

I haven't had the chance to wind it out yet, I've still got to run in the engine, which means 3 tanks of fuel at 1/2 throttle with 3/4 bursts every now and then.....so far I've only been through 1 tank

One day I will install a nice big 30cc engine.....4+ horse power and probably more like 140kmh, woohoo

btw that's not me in the pic, I'm much better looking :P
