Why you need it?
It's as simple as this, if you value your account, then use 2SV.
How it works
When you sign in on applicable device, you'll get a code texted to your mobile phone. Without the code, you (or anyone else) can't sign in.

Now this bit is REALLY important
When you set up 2SV, you get 10 backup codes
If you can't receive a code for some reason, you can use a back up code instead
When they are generated... Make a note of them straight away.

To find them on your PS4
Go to [Settings] > [Account Management] > [Account Information] > [Security] > [Two-Step Verification] > [Backup Codes]

and you'll see a link for 2SV,
This takes you to another page where you can click on "backup codes" to view them.

Then head here on PC/Mac/Mobile browser
You can set it up straight from your PS4:
1. Go to [Settings] > [Account Management] > [Account Information] > [Security] > [2-Step Verification] > [Set Up Now].
2. Carefully enter your mobile number and select [Add].
3. You will receive a verification code by text — enter the code into the PS4 verification section to authorise your mobile number.
4. Select [Activate] to switch on 2SV.

I've mentioned this before, but, This 2 Step Verification Service should be made with an Opt Out Clause instead of an Opt In Clause..
If you don't have a Handy Phone, your normal handset in the House can receive a text also if it has a Screen.
2 Step Verification is not a Service just for Smart Phones.

All anyone here can tell you is check your junk/spam email and make sure you typed the correct email address in, or contact customer support.
im having issues with 2 step. it is set up and has been for a while, but recently its been texting me constantly.
i get a text from the following:
Sony, +447576502868, +447781470659, +447365280698, +447980681654, +447421828155 and others all saying:
"2-step verification, which is active on your account on playstation network, is not yet compatible with other sony services. in order to sign in to another sony service, deactivate 2-step verification here: http//idp.sn/security or sign in with an alternative sign in ID."
also getting text from:
+44378555167 and other numbers saying:
"é@yn$£2-step verification is active on your sony entertainment network account. please visit http://idp.sn/device-password to generate a"
im not doing anything with sony when i get these texts. 9 times out of 10 im in bed asleep! i get them daily and throughout the night. waking everyone up.
can anyone help.
i am currently using sony network on PS4, PS3 and on samsung s8.
