Ps4 media not reading mp4 files

I'm using a 16gb usb stick to watch a mp4 file but after trying to load it says something like "media not playable". Why? Isn't it supposed to support mp4 files? Help appreciated.

Is it in a folder?

When using a USB storage device, your video files need to be in a folder for your PS4™ system to recognise them.

Is it encoded correctly?
