I have 40 + GB of data in my PS4, and I when I try to download a simple 1 GB update, at 3% or so when the update is preparing, it says the update has failed. When I go on view details, it says I need to make more space in my PS4, and I don't have enough data. But I have 40GB?? I have to delete like an extra 10GB of data and then it works, but I shoudn't have to do that, and I am running out of things to delete. Please help!
No you haven't got enough although the update maybe a few GB the game is reserving the total file size x2. If the game total file size is currently 40GB you will need 80GB of free space available.
Either free up more space or consider upgrading the internal HDD or investing in a external HDD for the recently introduced external HDD storage support.
It happens on all of my games. One of my games that gets updated sometimes is Rocket League, but thats something like 8GB (idk but its pretty low). At that point I had 30GB but didn't update until I deleted some things. Will the upgraded HDD's fix this, or give me more storage altogether?@mont348
Once the system storage is below 50GB you will start running into game update problems.
The PS4 4.50 update introduced external HDD storage support which is detailed in the link underneath.
The other option is to upgrade the internal HDD,to be honest the above solution is the easiest option.@NinjaDude12399
It doesn't reserve for the whole game. As i had an update for battlefield 1 which wouldn't download a couple of days ago.
Battlefield 1 currently stands at 95.6gb so by that logic i would need 190gb to install the update. But i managed to download it by getting storage above 50gb.
So i would say it is when free space drops below a certain percentage or 50gb.@mont348
It will depend on the game Elder Scrolls Online,Driveclub,GTA V and Uncharted 4 to name a few will require more space to update, like we both say once you get below 50GB you are likely to run into problems.@TheStill
It still bugs me that 1gb updates won't download when you drop below 50gb.
I can't think of a reason for it not to. The ps4 has already taken its chunk for the os. They'll probably already be some saved for the share facility as well.
I think my solution is to finish more games before i buy more.@mont348
Where do I get these HDD storage supports?@mont348
In the UK, Argos, PC world, Amazon, any halfway competent pc shop, or the equivalent wherever you are.@NinjaDude12399
If I have 50 gigs free, I should be able to fill up those 50 gigs. This is an issue on Sony's end that they NEED to fix. It's absolutely unacceptable that I should have to buy a third party device to manage my storage when I already have more than enough space on the system itself.@mont348
The same problems would arise on other systems not just the PS4 you need double the free space available to download a game or update file.Problem with update files most will reserve the total file size of the entire game x2 even if the update is a only few GB.
If you only purchase games digitally you really need to look at more storage options. If you do purchase disk games delete a game temporarily it only takes minutes to re-install a game off disk so you can get another game to update.
There's nothing stopping you using that last bit of space but it will become a juggling act managing that space.@YourBoyEvan
Can you send me a link to one online please? I don't know what is the correct one and I want to make sure I get the right one@mont348
Turned into a digital hoarder over past few years, but now driveclub gone missing from my library. Going to start putting blu ray into the mix.@TheStill
Drive club has had licencing issues for a couple of years at least particularly if you haven't played for a while you will need to contact customer support for assistance.
Thanks for reply ,will call them today.@mont348
Finally got around calling support and after a 10 minute call with a helpful advisor, she confirmed there was a problem with the licences and its been moved to appropriate department to hopefully solve it.@mont348
This morning recieved email from uk support to say the game has been added to my library. Just checked and its there! Happy days. Big thanks to mont and uk support .
What is the logic behind that?
You need 200 GB, but the game itself only needs 100 GB...
I don’t understand this logic at all.
It’s like, you need 120$ to buy an 60$ game... Seriously?!@mont348
And no, either Nintendo or Microsoft got this “2X” problem, neither do my gaming pc... It’s just as NinjaDude12399 said, It’s only Sony and PlayStation 4.
PlayStation 3 did not have this problem and neither does the PlayStation Vita.@mont348
Actually you're wrong, all computing devices do this as its the way hard drives and files operate
But hey, why tell the truth if it doesn't suit your little rant@Sammy_Nilsson
Game downloads then installs. So for a small amount of time it will have the download data and install data. Once install is finished the download data will be deleted. Just like a PC.@Sammy_Nilsson
