Spark your imagination with «Tearaway™ Unfolded»! 

 

 

Last week amazing creators of «LittleBigPlanet» have agreed to open their doors for a summer Away Day - a one day studio showcase at Media Molecule for key Gaming Media, attended and hosted by key Media Molecule staff.

 

 

You can find more about their creative Team on the Official page (also, other really important information is available there specifically for web nerds and cats :smileysurprised:. Oh, and there's a styleguide! :Lol:)

 

  

 

So, we were lucky enough to attend the Event and find out more about this mesmerizing adventure through a magical world of paper, rebuilt on PlayStation®4; for these connoisseurs we focused on the «Unfolded» elements of the game, specifically, the additional content, re-mastered visuals, bespoke control functionality and the companion app, had 1-2-1 interviews with key Team Members where they were answering your questions, roof terrace drinks and a BBQ, hanging out with the Molecules (*check out the pic above :smileyvery-happy:), a Studio tour, and some paper crafting, obviously! ;)

A bit about their Team:

 

They have «a whatever you need to do your work approach» and this also includes a kitchen - full of all the food and drink you could ever ask for. Check out the amount of cereals :smileysurprised: on the shelves! (click on the image for better view *scary)

 

 

 

 

 

Naturally, such a Creative Team love making things together and it can be seen throughout the Studio - floor is open, bright, colourful, and a little bit messy. ^,,,^

 

 

They have some cosy meeting areas, and some comfortable quiet thinking spaces to retreat to when things get too noisy.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

There’s also an Art-Studio where they hold life drawing classes every week, and get paint all over the floor. :smileytongue:

And why not to listen to the music track by most talented composer, Brian D'Oliveira (Brian has composed music for video games such as Papo &Yo, LittleBigPlanet™3 and Tearaway™. he is passionate about mastering (and building) new instruments, technologies and tools in combination with ancient musical cultures and the ability to give them new lives in modern formats. :smileysurprised:), whilst reading about the adventures through the magical world (sort of give it a 3D affect :smileytongue:).  

 

 

The adventure that was once held in your hands has been reimagined as a world inside your TV, with a bigger, more beautiful world to explore, and all new fourth-wall-busting ways to play.

 

Rex Crowle has opened showcase by dedicating exclusive skins in «Tearaway™» style to his amazing Team.

 

 

Indeed, key Media Molecule staff was «immortalised» in vibrant papery world! :smileytongue:

 

 

 

 

 

 

*Naturally, after that specific moment Mm has politely asked all Media to keep the best parts of game until the release of the game :smileywink: to the public (no photography or a video of the game allowed), on the 9th September for SCEE, with the UK releasing on the 11th.

Creating a game for PS4™: 

 

«It was extremely important to us to build this personal connection between you, a game and a DUALSHOCK 4 controller, and make you feel like you are going on a journey in this creative world. It was giving us new opportunities: touch pad, built-in speaker, motion sensors, SHARE button and a light bar. If you are using a touch pad, then you are reaching new exciting in-game possibilities. Obviously, the difference this time was a distance between you, outside of the game, TV and a controller, and rather trying to ignore it, we embraced the new functions and asked the whole Team to be involved in creating first prototypes».

 

Game jam: 

 

«As you may have guessed, we started from scratch changing the gaming world of Tearaway™ by bringing you a new customisation with the help of a few features:

  • sound development - such as gust of wind, the movement of throwing the objects, catching the objects in your controller, simply swiping your controller and dramatically changing the inner world; 
  • bring atmosphere of a paper world (you can see 600 000 paper folds in the game, to be precise) - not only bright and colourful, but this time by simply exploring light and shade (some of it came from game play in the Studio). 
  • expanding the storyline so the user can simply explore (how often do you explore a paper world, right? :))
  • bring the back story of the other characters from the previous game;
  • added new PMC characters as well, new designs;
  • removing all «artificial artifacts» so you would feel like you are in a real paper world - bringing you darker, stranger corners of the world. You can definitely hear it in the new soundtrack which was created by Kenneth Young and Brian D'Oliveira (50 of tracks, to be precise!).   

There was no limit to our imagination».

Family game: 

 

«We took aboard comments from our fans and tried to implement them in this new game. One of the options we wanted to add is a family feel to the project, so each member of your family could play along and be a part of your paper world. For example, you can use any mobile device, such as iOS, Android or even a PS Vita, and use our PlayStation App to customise your game. Simply take a picture with your device, use a touch pad, send a photo in and change dramatically the world in the game! :) We hope to flood the Internet with some squirrels and colour!»

Rex Crowle is answering some of your questions during an Interview:

 

  • Online ID: [CodemanPSX] EN Community: Will you be able to change the skin tone of your messenger? 
  • Rex Crowle: Yes! Every part of the character you can know customise to be pretty much any colour you want. For example, on a Vita version you could customise the skin colour of your fingers, but you do not have fingers in the PS4™ version, so we wanted to allow your messanger to be any colour you want.

 

  • Online ID: [hayzink] EN Community: Your imagination seems to have no limits, however hardware does, how hard is it matching your vision to the tools that are available on PS4, what has been easy and what has been hard when developing dreams? 
  • Rex Crowle: PS4™ has really allowed us to think bigger and concentrate on simulation more, and really, we did not have any problems - it was more about the opportunities. Not so much with the hardware and a processing power, but with the controller and a way you interact with it. So, we put more of our time on a feature like touch pad.  

 

  • Online ID: [niall-mag] EN Community: What was the reason for the world of Tearaway being made of paper? Considering this is like a look inside the Playstation Vita and PS4, shouldn't everything be made of electrical parts or lines of code? 
  • Rex Crowle: *laughs :) We knew that the paper will make the world look very different and not only realistic, but also as a fantasy as well, because we all know the way paper reacts: you fold it, or may be see it as a pop-up book and have an element of surprise. So, here it was... an idea of creating a world out of paper. Only the beauty of being a gamer and a coder that you can take it even further! As for the lines of code and electrical parts, we like a bit of personality which comes out of «non-digital things» - we like imperfections! :Party: This is what interested us in the past with LBP™ series. Pixel style is not our style! :)

 

  • Online ID: [Makes87] DE Community: What do you think about a hard-mode for Tearaway, i.e. Only one life?
  • Rex Crowle: Well, we sort of have it! :) When the game is out, check out the new characters who are called «misplaced gofers» - little animals which need to be carried through levels, so if you drop them, you will die. It's pretty difficult!

 

  • Online ID: [Savas_Skliros] GR Community: How difficult is to make platform games, especially now that the platform genre is trying to find its identity? 
  • Rex Crowle: «Tearaway™ Unfolded» comes from the platform game from its core, but we are trying to add a 3D or any other elements which will help you to explore this world from the different angle.
