Because 7.5gb X 2 = 15gb & that's how much space you need to download.

You'll get the 7.5gb of space back after instalation.

you need double the space to download the game via the internet i suggest purchasing and external hardrive to get the game and more space, also once its downloaded you get the 7.5 that was used back :)

This is completely wrong. You can't use an external HDD to play games off of.

@OP: Ignore this idiot, and buy an internal HDD.

That's terrible advice.

You can't play games from an external drive.

I ran into the same problem, but with ni no kuni, which has two downloads, one is 6GB and another is 16GB... After completely cleaning my ps3 and even formatting it, I now have a maximum of 31GB free space... which is 1GB less than what is apparently needed to download and install the large file!

Any ideas? I really don't wanna spend more money, as bying ni no kuni was kinda my gaming budget for the next month or two...

Is it possible to use an external USB HDD to assist with the installation? I know you cannot play games via the external HDD, but just for the downloading and installation?

No, you can't use an external HDD with games. Buy a bigger internal HDD. You need double the space minimum to download and install digital content from the PS store. Half of this space will be returned to you once installation is complete. This is same mechanic that's employed on PCs and Macs.

Yeah it's the operating system etc.

A brand new 120gb ps3 has only 97gb available to use.

HDD manufacturers use the decimal number system for their storage sizes, so they have a gigabyte as being 1,000,000,000 bytes. Computers on the otherhand use the binary number system, and as a result a gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes.

1,000,000,000/1,073,741,824 = 0.9313225746

Multiple the advertised size of any HDD by 0.9313225746 to get it's actual true size. Your HDD will be used as an example.

40 x 0.9313225746 = 37.25290298 gigs

A small fraction of this space will be lost after formatting. This happens with all filesystems.

The PS3's OS will reserve roughly 10% of the available space after formatting for it's own use (namely to store OS files and for the system cache). Which leaves you ~33.5 gigs for you apps, game saves, downloaded content, movies, music and of course for Home (this can take it up a sizable chunk of your HDD if you allow it to).

Yep, without knowing any of this^ at the time, my 120gb ps3 (brand new & fresh out of the box) said 111gb / 97gb...

Which meant 111gb actual, 97gb usable.

So on my system, the os & everything else is using 24gb.

The only way to use an external HDD to download games is to STRIP the external HDD casing and hope the internal HDD is a sata 2, 9.5mm, HDD inside, then put that HDD in to the PS3. It will be erased inside the PS3 and reformated...
But this requires that you have a USB MEMORY stick with the Firmware on to install to the HDD...

so 1 set of screw drivers.

One external HDD

1 memory stick with firmware update on it...

After using screwdrivers on the external HDD you might end up with this...

This is the best solution. I bought 80GB fat model and after few months i replaced it with 320GB HDD and i hadn't yet ran out of space. New 500GB drive costs 58€ here in Finland. Not that expensive.

I had the same problem. Im assuming you have the slim ps3? The solution is to buy a 2.5 inch SATA internal hard drive and the sony mounting kit, you can then install the hard drive and increase the space. This is really easy to do, i just did it today.

Search 'install ps3 slim hard drive' on youtube and you will see how its done. Its real easy.
