Twisted Metal, most PlayStation gamers have played at least one of the many evolutions in this epic series that has been around since the early days of PlayStation and last night some lucky gamers gathered at the Oxford Art Factory thanks to IGN and PlayStation® for the opportunity to get some hands on time with the latest and greatest incarnation of Twisted Metal.
The reason for this exclusive sneak peak at this upcoming title, was an incredible IGN Black Beta Event and for those of you out there that haven’t heard of a Black Beta before it’s an exclusive event that is first come first served via SMS entry from the Black Beta website, Normally there are less than 200 double pass tickets offered so you know if you get in to one of these events then you’re going to be a part of something that money can’t buy and this time it was all about Twisted Metal.
The venue had been decorated with Twisted Metal branding with everything backlit with deep red lights to create an atmosphere straight out of the game and as you entered the main area of the Oxford Art Factory a myriad of consoles had been set up throughout the venue making it easy for everyone to test the game out and show off their skills.
Adding to the atmosphere of the event a Sweet Tooth style Ice Cream van handed frozen treats to those waiting to get in and a carnival style hotdog stand had been set up inside the main area dishing out delicious hotdogs to the masses along with people dressed as Sweet Tooth and Doll Face circulating through the crowd and posing for photos.
In addition to this 3 TV’s had been set up in a separate area with the PS1, PS2 and PS3 versions of the game side by side to not only show the journey of the franchise but also give those who have been playing the game since the beginning (like yours truly) a chance to get nostalgic and relive those early days of Twisted Metal.
After the venue was filled with the more than 400 attendees (making this the biggest Black Beta to date) everyone had a chance to get some game time with one of the many consoles before the sounds of an ice cream vans chime was heard and everyone’s attention was directed to the stage for introductions and a welcome to the IGN Black Beta for Twisted Metal. We were given a rundown of the game it was announced that there would be a competition using the 8 consoles that had been set up in the middle of the main area for a multiplayer death match where the winners of each round would progress to a final battle where to overall victor would be decided. And what spoils would be on offer you ask? Well nothing less than the soon to be released portable powerhouse, the PlayStation® Vita.
After that announcement the crowd roared and people quickly queued to sign up for their chance to enter the competition and try to be crowned the winner and walk away with a brand new PlayStation® Vita. People tried to improve their knowledge of the game, the vehicles, the arenas and the weapons before the competition began. All too soon the competition commenced and as the rounds quickly progressed the winners from each of the preliminary rounds waited for their oppertunity to play in the finals.
Those that chose not to participate in the competition had the opportunity to play Twisted Metal on one of the other many consoles or get some hands on time with the PS Vita and play a little bit of Uncharted: Golden Abyss or Wipeout 2048.
The final 8 players each picked their weapons (vehicles) of choice and as the final battle commenced with a PS Vita on the line, no one was pulling any punches, it was a winner takes all moment. As the battle raged on player 4 took an early lead but were quickly caught by player 3 and it seemed to be a 2 horse race with the lead going back and forth between them.
As the clock ticked down to the last 2 minutes of the game player 1 and player 2 seemed to come from obscurity to challenge for the lead. As the game entered the final minute everyone was looking for every kill possible to ensure victory and in the last 10 seconds only a meagre 25 points separated the top 4 players and as the crowd counted down player 1 and player 4 went head to head in an attempt to destroy each other and take the win but as the final seconds ticked away the winner was decided. Player 4 had maintained his 25 point lead and taken not only the victory but the prize of the incredible PS Vita.
This was a truly fantastic night and a definite credit to the team at IGN and PlayStation for putting on another unique and incredible event and if you were there I’m sure you would agree. For those that missed out keep an eye on the IGN Black Beta website and au.playstation.com for future event opportunities and hopefully next time it might be you competing for an incredible prize like the PS Vita.
What a great night and such a tense final round haha.
Great pics and write-up Fury!
